Watch Live: Lakewood Township Committee Meeting 6/22/17

Photo: Trekking up to the Catskills

Westgate residents opposed to change by township

The Township said it would enforce the parking on N. Crest  before changing it to a 1 way street. They say that Buses  will now go down N. Crest. Currently buses dont go on other streets in Westgate that are 1 way and hundreds of kids will still be walking to the main street. Why are a few well connected people getting their way.  This will inconvenience a lot of residents and put the safety of children and pedestrians at risk with cars flying down N. Crest if it becomes 1 way.  Traffic will now be diverted to the back parking lots creating a very dangerous situation.

They were approved."

Many Girls Still Not Accepted to High School As Camp Begins

School is over and the fun of camp begins but there are still many 8th grade girls who still have not been accepted into high school as of today. Among those still waiting are valedictorians straight A students and average students. No rhyme or reason that explains it.  When will this madness end?
Why do girls and their parents have to live with this worry throughout the summer?

Letter From Leading American Roshei Yeshiva Re: Giyus Bnei Yeshivos in Erretz Yisroel

To: Maran Hagaon Hagadol Rav Aharon Yehudah Leib Shteinman shlita, Hagaon Hagadol Rav Moshe Hillel Hirsh shlita, Rosh Yeshivas Slobodka, Hagaon Hagadol Rav Dov Landau shlita, Rosh Yeshivas Slobodka, Hagaon Hagadol Rav Gershon Edelstein shlita, Rosh Yeshivas Ponovezh,  Hagaon Hagadol Rav Aviezer Piltz shlita, Rosh Yeshivas Tifrach, Hagaon Hagadol Rav Dovid Cohen shlita, Rosh Yeshivas Chevron, Hagaon Hagadol Rav Boruch Mordechai Ezrachi shlita, Rosh Yeshivas Ateres Yisroel, Hagaon Hagadol Rav Boruch Weissbaker shlita, Rosh Yeshivas Beis Matisyahu, Hagaon Hagadol Rav Moshe Barzovsky shlita, Rosh Yeshivas Slonim,

In representation of the Olam HaTorah here in the USA, we hereby address the Roshei Yeshivah and Torah leaders in Eretz Yisrael,
The bleak situation regarding the drafting of bnei yeshivah [into the IDF] has been brought to our attention by many roshei Yeshivah, specifically of the Sephardic community. Those who approached us supplied detailed explanations and examples regarding the enactment of new [harsh] laws, and the enforcement thereof. These [facts] have nothing to do with the sharp differences of opinion amongst the various chareidi factions in Eretz Yisrael.
We will detail several points, in short.

News Silence About Giyus Asifa in NY

Did you know close to 20,000 Yidden gathered at a sports arena in Brooklyn this week. They cane to the Barclays center and listened to Admorim and Gedolim talk about the Giyus threat in Eretz Hakodesh currently facing Yeshiva Bochurim.
The Asifa was organized by Satmar yet some Litvishe Roshei yeshiva both from Eretz Yisrael and the US felt it was important to come down and address the crowd. The national and international media covered and reported the event. But, you wouldn't know it took place if you get your news from the mainstream frum media outlets. There was no coverage from the Daily newspapers such as Hamodia or Yated N'eeman. The websites that provide kosher news were silent too. They report on every stupidity and even some questionable content but on the Giyus gathering not a word not even a photo!
Was there a news blackout?

Mazel Tov! Over 25 Weddings in Lakewood This Week

Its Chasunah season, The simcha halls in Lakewood were booked all week long. Walk to your fridge, look at your calendar, check out your scheduler on your cell phone, the boxes are full and scribbled in with reminders for the many Simchas during the month of June. B"H there are so many simchos in klal yisrael. We tend not to report on positive and good news. Yet how can we ignore the very fact that yidden are traveling every night to one, two, or even three weddings. Families are commuting throughout the Tri-state area, from Brooklyn to Lakewood, from Lakewood to Monsey, or from out of town. Many are traveling long road trips to or from the Midwest or other places out of town to attend a family simcha.

We are witnessing the continuation and constant building of klal yisrael. The continuation of the promise of lo yomushu mpi zraacha. Yes we are getting home very late and than have a wedding the next night again. Not to forget the Shabbos aufruf and the excited family get together for Shabbos Sheva Brachos.

We tend to take it for granted, however we must stop and pause and see what is going on around us. We should appreciate the kindness of Hashem and to think about, and help those that are having a difficult time with shidduchim during theses times of Simcha.

Simchas by Klal YIsrael, Lechaim!!

No BOE Busing today For The Way Home

For those schools that have BOE contracted busing through the LSTA there will not be any busing for the way home today. Although the Lakewood school district is getting paid extra from the LSTA to bus students to private schools, the buses are still bound to the public school schedule who are on a shortened day schedule. Hopefully next year the bids should stipulate that bus companies must conform to the schedule of the private schools.

Former Lakewood BOE Attorney Rehired

The Lakewood BOE had a special meeting last night,  on the agenda was a decision to approve a board attorney or reject all proposals and advertise a new RFP for Attorney/Legal Services. In the roller coaster of Lakewood politics former Board of Ed lawyer Michael Inzelbuch was hired to represent the district. Mr. Inzelbuch served as board attorney for 10 years and was replaced in 2012. He sued the district  representing special education students in lawsuits which resulted in  more expensive educational services. Ironically the School district at the time filed a lawsuit against Inzelbuch, in an attempt to prohibit him from suing due to a conflict of interest.

Developer plans 20 Apts Former Lakewood auto sjop

APP reports-  Ventus Auto Center moved away from Park Avenue about seven months ago, but vacant land doesn't last long in Lakewood and a local developer is now planning to build 20-apartments at the site.

WestGate Yes Lakewood commons NO

It all comes down to who you know and who is stronger that is the unfortunate system in Politics and Lakewood operates the same way. At the township committee meeting last night an Ordnance was passed turning North Crest street in West Gate to a one way only. That was not the recommendation by traffic and safety at the sneaky meeting 2 days before Pesach. The opinion was to enforce traffic and not extend the one way all the way through. NO public hearings took place and township officials did not take a vote or get the input of ALL residents who live on that street. Some of those pushing for it don't even live in Westgate any more but they have friends in High places. It may or may not be a good idea to have it go one way but the way they went bout it stinks

On the other hand a petition by Lakewood commons residents asking the town to reinstate parking on one side of the street was rejected in the workshop meeting because traffic safety and others don't want it. Too bad they don't have the right connections.

An Emboldened Vaad continues With Its spins

As the saying goes "fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me".

Fresh off their "landslide" victory the Vaad goes back to the same games. Oh, they plan on setting up a forum or email for the residents to interact and reach out to the Vaad members, who were unreachable until now.
Read the Vaad letter below from 2006 what they also promised to do back then.

The vaad had more than enough time to regroup refocus and truly represent the needs of the entire Lakewood tzibbur but did absolutely nothing.

See you again in 2027 with the same spin.

From 11 years ago:
As for the restructuring of the Vaad, (Meir) Lichtenstein said: “The outreach the Vaad did before, and the issues that arose, were fewer because the community was smaller. I think the Vaad realizes that as the community grows they have to grow with the community.”

LAKEWOOD — The Vaad, an influential council of Orthodox Jewish leaders, will be restructured to better respond to the concerns of the township's fast-growing Orthodox community, the organization announced in a letter to Orthodox residents.

A council of rabbis is to be formed for the purpose of giving guidance to the 11-member Vaad, which issues political endorsements and takes positions on various civic matters. "It is the intent . . . to place the Vaad under the guidance of the Ichud Rabbonim (council of rabbis) and through that to ensure that the needs of the entire Kehilla (community) are appropriately met," the letter stated. The Vaad was created by leaders at Beth Medrash Govoha, the country's largest rabbinical college and center for Talmudic studies, which has long been the magnet that's drawn Orthodox families to Lakewood. Now, however, many of the newer Orthodox residents have no connection to the yeshiva, which has injected a new dynamic into town politics, say close observers of the Lakewood scene.

"We sincerely recognize that the Vaad . . . must adapt in order to better represent the needs of a growing and diverse (religious community)," the letter stated.

Joe Atlas, a Vaad member and spokesman for the group, said it has become increasingly difficult for the Vaad to respond to all the various concerns of residents as Lakewood's population grows. "As much as the Vaad tries to meet the needs of everybody in the community, it cannot meet with every single person," Atlas said.

The Vaad comprises 11 Orthodox leaders. The council of rabbis will include between 60 and 70 religious leaders from Lakewood's Jewish congregations, Atlas said.

The expectation is that the rabbis will be better able to keep their fingers on the pulse of the community and bring concerns to the Vaad, Atlas said.

In its endorsement letter, the Vaad wrote, "As we see it, municipal government needs to drastically and rapidly change across the board and become much more responsive to the needs of the Kehilla (community) and Yochid (individual)."

The Vaad endorsed two incumbent Orthodox committeemen seeking re-election — Meir Lichtenstein and Menashe Miller.

"We have asked Meir and Menashe to implement a forceful program of change in the way town hall is run and operates," the letter stated. "This will include some significant personnel changes and restructuring, backed by a continued aggressive advocacy for the needs of each and every individual in Lakewood.

Unprecedented Election Campaign to Beat The "Unqualified"

If your looking for a silver lining the election, the Vaad with all its control and power, panicked. A few weeks prior, they wrote off the candidates as a joke and sat comfortably. Then the arrogance wore off they got very nervous and went into full panic mode. The  campaign they ran was unprecedented in Lakewood history for a primary election. To beat 4 unqualified candidates they spent over $50,000 dollars and went all out. Primaries used to be a cakewalk they would issue a letter the day before and that was it. For the first time  they got the Roshei Yeshiva to write a new letter in support of the Vaad, if that wasnt

This is no Win for the VAAD

Still to early to go through the numbers and see how the districts voted. The Seniors voted strong for the incumbents. As For The frum Vote it was a low turn out and unfortunately no one could get backing by any Rav in a town with over 150 Rabbonim. if they would have all backed one candidate they would have a chance.

For the Vaad to declare victory would be a slap in the face to the thousands of Lakewood residents who have been ignored and disenfranchised. There are many who dont have a voice and the powerful leadership is not connected to them. The bnei Hayeshiva are shortchanged. If only the Vaad would have put the same kochos and passion to help as it did in this last "panic week" to win and remain in power maybe things would be different. The VAAD attitude of undermining the plight of so many Lakewood taxpayers who sit and traffic, who struggle to pay high taxes, can not go on. Controlling the media, naming residents as balei machlokes just to remain in power, is weakness its not leadership. Telling people "we were here first"or  "no one asked you to move here" etc. is just insulting. Regardless, the way it is can not go on.

The grassroots campaign is only taking off. Thanks to all the courageous candidates who listened to the people.

The planned Asifa at Barclays center is still underway however in order to have a broad coalition of the Litvish and all Chasidshe communities there is some talk of postponing it. As of now the Satmar faction led by Reb Zalman Leib Teitelbaum are the ones that will be going.

Ten years ago The Vaad Promised to "Restruct"and "Adapt" Nothing Was Done, Enough of the Bluff

In 2006 The during a contentious elections Bnei yeshiva and Lakewood residents were angry and upset at the Vaad's rule and control. The Vaad at the time put out a letter (see below) and promised to restruct and better adapt and respond to the concerns of Lakewood residents. The Vaad promised to form a "Ichud Rabbonim" to ensure the needs of the entire Lakewood Kehilla.

Fast Forward 11 years later its now 2017 the town has exploded and doubled its population we are at the same position no new members were added  NOT ONE RAV (outside the vaad)  IN LAKEWOOD HAS ANY SAY ON THE VAAD. Its controlled by the same few who continue to use and abuse the koach Hatzibbur.
Do they really think were such fools?
The Chutzpah to Ignore the needs of the kehilla yet call themselves representatives of the entire town?
And above all they pull out the Achdus card to quash any opposition. Have they no shame for sitting on their laurels all these years yet continue to fool the residents with puff pieces and PR through their controlled media outlets.
They had their chance and DID NOTHING. Its all talk no action. Its  time to let others represent the town.

Article from 2006
Lakewood, NJ - The Vaad, an influential council of Orthodox Jewish leaders, will be restructured to better respond to the concerns of the township’s fast-growing Orthodox community, the organization announced in a letter to Orthodox residents.

Why Is There No Traffic Light At Pine and MLK?

Why was the much needed light at Pine street and MLK in Lakewood never installed?

Why is Avreichim shul building at 10th and Madison still sitting empty only with a foundation?

Why are there no shuls allowed to be built in Westgate when hundreds of  parents and kids have no seats to daven?

Why are families ripped apart with Mesira to authorities alienating children from parents and no one says a word?

Why do well connected schools have busing and others still have to car pool?

Why is the culture in Lakewood of  כל דאלים גבר?

The answer is that some well connected Vaad members and township committeemen were inconvenienced by these things or have a financial gain. They put their personal interests ahead of the Kehilla at large or help their friends on the backs of others. So if your upset about sitting on Pine street for 10 years and nothing was done  its because it inconvenienced a few powerful people. Is this what a Vaad is meant for? Do you want this insanity to continue. Go out and vote send a message that enough is enough if you sit back the Charade will continue.

Not Sure Who To Vote For? listen to this plea from a simple Lakewood resident

Polls are open from 6:00 AM until 8:00 PM.
"I sit in Lakewood traffic everyday, probably for about 2 hours in total - of what should be about 20 minutes max. I beg of everyone who can vote, to please go vote, - if not for yourselves then do it as a good deed for me. Please vote for change, we can't go on like this.
When you're unsure what to do you ask for advice, but there are no questions - the status quo just isn't tolerable. A neighbor of mine has switched to working from home because of the lost travel time. It just can't continue. Route 9 [going] north a few years ago was backed up till James, now it's backed up to Hearthstone. Imagine after the oak street corridor how it's going to look."

Turn Off Your Ringers

Unless you want to get annoying condescending divisive robocalls from the vaad telling you to shut your brain and continue the madness they created. The Vaad spokesman couldn't leave a simple election endorsement without a parting shot at Thousands of frum Lakewood residents who only want what is best for the town. In the Vaads own words "Let us stop those that are trying to divide us and weaken us".

American Gedolim send letter about Giyus to Gedolim in EY

The Lakewood Rosh Yeshiva Rav Malkiel Kotler signed a letter see below together with the Novominsker Rebbe, Rav Aaron Feldman, Rav Meir Hershkowitz and other American Gedolim pertaining to Giyus which was sent to Gedolei Eretz yisrael explaining their position about the dangers associated with the Draft law.  In addition another letter in the name of Lakewood Roshei Yeshiva calling on the bnei Yeshiva to attend the upcoming asifa at Barclays center was deemed as a photoshop. see below.

Controlling the Vote by Controlling The Press

When you want to control the voters, you control the media that feeds them information and silence all opposition. The Vaad strength is most of its base are older people with no accesses to the internet and they rely on mailings, local newspapers and robocals to land lines.
The Vaad wrote the following in its endorsement propaganda:

Individual community members can have legitimate disagreements with some decisions that are made at the community or governmental levels. The Vaad not only respects that, but encourages feedback and dialogue. They constantly re-evaluate and re-calibrate their askanus based on the evolving needs of the community, as expressed to them at the grassroots level.

Has the Vaad allowed feedback and dialogue?
Does calling others as "Unqualified" show respect?

Why than did were several media outlets of the frum community told not to run articles or give a platform to the candidates running for Lakewood township who were not endorsed by the vaad?

A Yated columnist wrote 2 scathing articles (HERE) about the traffic and over development in Lakewood he was summoned by the powers that be and told emphatically no more articles. The 3rd one of the series is still in draft mode. posted ads for some candidates running for township but the posts were quickly back dated to appear on the second page. Why?

TLS and the Vaad make strange bedfellows, just a few years ago the word VAAD was considered a 4 letter word and was not mentioned. Now, not only is TLS a
