ויחן שם ישראל נגד ההר כאיש אחד בלב אחד

Who's dividing the town?

What a way to go into yom tov, on a day that we prepare for kabolas hatorah a day where it says ויחן שם ישראל נגד ההר a day of achdus כאיש אחד בלב אחד. Thank you to the vaad for getting involved in a nasty campaign on Erev shavuos calling wonderful youngeleit as "unqualified".

You were silent for all these years and ignored the cries pain and anguish of Lakewood residents who were speaking out. You couldn't find a better time and way to respond than now and create an atmosphere of divisiveness, and machlokes?

What did these selfless members of our community do to deserve this?
We have a list of wonderful candidates that care deeply about the town and they took the time and effort putting themselves out there for the rest of us.

Did you even make an effort to reach out to them and hear what they have to say?
The tzibbur deserves a better preparation for shavuos, than this.

Public Statement from Democrate Candidate Township committee Dovid Gruman

Hi To All My loyal supporters,

Due to the overwhelming amount of correspondence I have received since the VAAD endorsement was released . I apologize for the delay in responding to all of your messages personally but rest assured I will be responding to all of you personally within the next few days. For efficiency I decided to share my thought here in the interim.

I too find it very disturbing that the Lakewood Vaad would write specifically about me that I am an unqualified candidate. They put out separate flyers for the republican and democrat election. I am running on the democratic ticket and I am the only candidate they are not endorsing.

They wrote “Regrettably, there is a vocal effort by several unqualified candidates to divide the Kehilla”

1. They never called or attempted to reach out to me to learn to determine who I am and what I stand for.
How can they determine I am unqualified without knowing anything about me?

Photo:MK meets Lakewood inventor of Warning Device to Prevent Child Car Deaths

New requirements aimed at ending the epidemic of small children forgotten and left to die in cars, United Torah Judaism Knesset member Uri Maklev, who heads the Science and Technology committee in the Knesset met with a Lakewood resident who invented technology that can help prevent toddler car deaths. The committee accepted several recommendations aimed at preventing the deaths of children forgotten in overheated cars, following a spate of such cases.
One of the proposals is a requirement for all car seats to be fitted with standardized technology that would alert parents should they forget to take their children out of the car. The requirement will be phased in over the next three years in Israel. In addition, Kindergartens across Israel will also introduce a new system for the new school year, whereby teachers and parents will have to notify one another if a child is absent without explanation.

Turx: Why Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump have a Heter to be mechalel Shabbos

Source- see video below
In an interview with an Israeli website White house correspondent Jake Turx explains the heter for Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump to desecrate the shabbos. President Trump relies heavily on their advice he says, they are from his most trusted advisers, should the need arise or something happens on shabbos the president has to to discuss it with them. So if an issue with North Korea crops up or anything that is of life and death Situation the president needs to contact them ASAP. He must have them to be avilable at his side at all times. Obama treasury secretary jack Lew who is an orthodox Jew also had a heter to speak to the president on shabbos when the president reached out to him.

Nurse union hangs signs around Lakewood

You may have noticed signs stapled on the electric polls around Lakewood.  Its from the NJ nurses union with an urgent message to patients and their families. It claims that Monmouth medical center southern campus is taking the registered nurses who work the regular units and floors and pulling them to the ICU to tend to critically ill patients. In order to work in the ICU you need months of training under specialized nurses who worked in the ICU. Currently the hospital at MMSC is pulling nurses who were never in the ICU before, to work there. The letter warns that these untrained nurses will be responsible for your family members in the ICU. Same goes with the Emergency room, pulling regular nurses to the Emergency room with no training in dealing with emergencies.

Largest Concentrations in NJ of people buying Insurance through the marketplace in the Lakewood-Toms River Area

The federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services recently released detailed data on the 2017 open enrollment period, running from November 1, 2016, through January 31, 2016, for the health insurance marketplaces. They show the largest concentrations of people buying insurance through the marketplace were in the Lakewood-Toms River area in Ocean County and in Union City, North Bergen, and West New York in Hudson County. Lakewood has 3,642 on the plan. While the greatest change in the law would significantly restructure Medicaid funding, which could cost 500,000 New Jerseyans their coverage, there are also provisions in the American Health Care Act that passed the House earlier this month that would affect those buying insurance in the marketplace. Lakewood students go to Trenton but can't protest in front of DOE building

NJ.com A dozen yellow school buses made the 45-minute trip from Lakewood High School to an empty lot where Trenton Thunder fans park for baseball games. More than 350 Lakewood school students, armed with signs that read "No More Loans" and "Minority Students Have Rights Too," shuffled off the buses single file to protest what they say is inadequate funding from the state.

The intended destination for the protest was the front of the state Department of Education building. But Sen. Robert Singer (R-Ocean) said there was a last-minute scramble after DOE officials told school administrators the landlord who owns the DOE building on Riverview Plaza received complaints from other tenants about the protests. As an alternate site, Singer said the district moved the students a mile away to the parking lot of the arena where the Thunder play baseball. My name is Yosef Travis, I have lived in Lakewood since 2008 and understand how this town has grown rapidly over the last couple years. I am a company owner and have multiple start-up companies as well as running the largest open market exchange for travel points, with over 500 travel agents and points brokers electing me the director of the market since 2013. I am well known within the travel industry as one of the most trusted and respected and get many calls daily regarding issues within the market that have to be dealt with properly.

Lakewood, being one of the lowest median-age towns in the United States, is host to tens of thousands of young families starting their lives off. It is time for a new face on the committee that represents the young voice of Lakewood.

I am young and have been involved for many years with activism within the community.  I feel as a representative on the Township Committee I can represent the thousands of young families that live in Lakewood and they can feel that they have a voice representing them, as well I understand that the seniors

Lakewood School district sends letter to parents ahead of trip to Trenton

The district is sending 350 high school students to Trenton tomorrow to gather support for more funding.

 Dear Parents and Guardians,

We write this to you to inform you about events occurring at the High School and our district as a whole.

As you may be aware due to an approximate $15 million deficit, we are forced to lay off hundreds of staff and severely curtail services and sports. The Board nor the Township want this and are attempting to gather support for additional funding from Trenton.

Our staff and students are very concerned.

Therefore, as a result of legitimate concern of our staff and students and so as to have an organized vehicle to express their viewpoints, we are having our history, art, and language art classes focus on our democratic values of First Amendment rights and freedom of the press over the next few days.

Prices for food and goods go up

The $3.90 cakes at NPGS in Lakewood went up by 50 cents this week  to $4.39 The Yated newspaper is now $3, Ami  and Mishpacha magazine are now selling at a newsstand price of $6. Previously price increases were blamed on the high price of Gas and other cost increases of agricultural products. With Oil prices  stable its hard to know what is driving up the prices. In general market analysts say Inflation is back, after disappearing in March, and it's showing up in a broad range of costs for goods and services. So while the supermarkets competition  currently may benefit the consumer, in the end prices will only rise.

Feel free to give your spinner a try in the store. Make sure that you dont hear a scraping noise and that the spinner is balanced. Cheaper spinners usually have cheaper bearings that may not work as smoothly. If the child has small hands, look for a smaller lighter spinner. New inexpensive small ones are on their way.

Hamodia:Lawsuit Claims Jackson’s Anti-School Construction Rule Motivated by Bias

Hamodia by Mordechai Wincorn

LAKEWOOD - Less than two months after Jackson Township enacted an effective ban on the construction of schools and dormitories, Agudath Israel of America and a property firm have filed a lawsuit arguing that the decision was motivated by “discriminatory animus” to the increasing presence of Orthodox Jews in towns surrounding Lakewood.

In March, a scheduled vote on the ban was delayed after over 150 Orthodox Jackson residents arrived at the meeting to voice their opposition. Yet, a week later, it was passed by the town council amid vociferous claims from its president, Barry Calogero, that the rule “is not against any race or religion” and solely meant to “reduce suburban sprawl and limit unwanted overdevelopment.”

Minhagim for Pesach Sheini

Some have a minhag to eat Matza on Pesach Sheini  it is brought down in the siddur of the Yaavetz (Rav Yaakov Emden) that it was revealed to him from the heavens that the kedusha of pesach and matzah lasts until pesach sheni because when they went out from Egypt they ate the matzos that they came out with until the 15 of iyar.
Some dont say tachnun.
Nitai Gavriel (Pesach Vol 3 Chapter 57) brings several Pesach Sheni customs. Among them:
To increase in Simcha (source: the Chida)
To read the parsha of Pesach Sheni and learn its Halachos (source: The Shalo).

Agudath Israel Files Illegal Discrimination Lawsuit Against Jackson Township , NJ

Agudath Israel Files Illegal Discrimination Lawsuit Against New Jersey Township
Agudath Israel of America and W R Property , a property owner in Jackson, have filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court in New Jersey against the T ow nship of Jackson, New Jersey , challenging  new Jackson zoning regulations, asserting that they are inte nded to prevent Orthodox Jews from opening schools or dormitories in Jackson. The suit alleges that the regulations were enacted wit h the express
purpose of such anti-Orthodox discriminati on, and are in clear violation of Federal law
The ordinances that are being challenged in Federal court were passe d this March by the Town Council of Jackson, which borders Lakew ood, in an area where many Orthodox Jews live. The lawsuit contends that the regulations were clearly motivated by a de sire to prevent Orthodox Jews
from moving to Jackson, and “ by discriminatory animus against the Orthodox Jewish community .”

The suit cites a number of examples of such anim us, expressed by public off icials and by vocal segments of the public.

Saying Tachnun on Erev Pesach Sheni

Tomorrow Wednesday the 14th of Iyar is Peach Sheni. Most people  dont say Tachnun Although it is not mentioned in shulchan Aruch to omit. The question is  does the rule  not to say Tachnun by mincha prior to a day that you don't say tachnun apply. There is a debate among poskim the minhag   hayeshiva in Lakewood is to say tachnun today. The reason given is that the simcha on pesach Sheni was only during the time that the Korban was brought and not all day.

BOE meeting today, expected to vote no on the budget

With a supposedly 15 million budget shortfall the Lakewood BOE may decide to vote down the budget at todays board meeting. Officials blame the flawed NJ state funding formula for not addresing the unique situation in Lakewood leaving them with out their fair share. The meeting wll take place tonight May 8 , 6:30 pm at  855 Somerset Avenue, Lakewood. see meeting agenda HERE
As it stands over 100 teachers will be laid off if the state wont kick in. Various community groups have united asking everyone to sign on to a petition calling on the state to fix the formula that will see more money flowing to help Lakewood public schools. There is a fear that they will try to raise property taxes and go above the allotted 2% cap. The district also revised the homeless student laws, where it is the obligation of the township to provide educational services to a homeless student based on his last known address.
some of the items on the agenda:

80K for a audit
25K monthly retainer for legal services
6K monthly for cloud Voice mail service + 21k activation fee
24k security access control to maintain video services

80 years ago, airship Hindenburg burst into flames over New Jersey

AP On May 6, 1937, the German airship Hindenburg burst into flames at Lakehurst Naval Air Station in New Jersey. Thirty-five people aboard and one person on the ground died. Ahead of Saturday’s 80th anniversary, the AP is republishing a version of its original coverage. It was reported from Lakewood.

LAKEWOOD, N.J. >> Its silvery bulk shattered by a terrific explosion, the German air liner Hindenburg plunged in flames at the United States Naval air station tonight, with indications that 34 of the 100 aboard and one spectator perished.
As minor explosions continued to tear its twisted aluminum skeleton and ribboned fabric for hours afterward, an official announcement listed as having survived 24 of 39 passengers aboard and 42 out of the 61 members of the crew, thus leaving a total of 34 unaccounted for. Twenty-four bodies were counted in two places, thirteen at the naval sick bay and eleven in the great hangar itself.
Timothy W. Margerum of Lakewood said there were more corpses in the naval station’s garage which had been hurriedly transformed into a morgue. Many of the dead were horribly burned by the oil fed flames. Margerum reported others were dying. Hospitals for miles around were filled with the injured.

Why Rebbe/Morah should not ban the fidget spinner in the classroom

Kids love those fidget spinner toys. But are they too much of a distraction? Teachers are totally fed up with the Fidget Spinner craze and schools across the country are starting to impose bans.
This season's hottest toy is marketed as an antidote for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, anxiety and autism — but it's also being banned in classrooms across the country. The list of schools banning the spinners seems to be growing and now includes schools in Massachusetts, Brooklyn, New York, Florida, Chicago, Illinois, and even across the pond in Manchester, England.
"Fidget spinners" are small, ball-bearing devices that the user can rotate between his or her fingers. The momentum of the toy provides a pleasing sensory experience, according to user reviews. At least one expert is disappointed by the bans. "These little gadgets should be called fidget tools, not toys, and they can be part of a successful strategy for managing fidgety behavior if they are introduced as a normal part of the classroom culture," said Claire Heffron, a pediatric occupational therapist in Clevel

Lakewood BOE president: pens Letter to the community as budget deficit looms

The Lakewood school district reportedly could lay off more than 100 teachers see HERE
This time can no longer threaten courtesy busing, so now other non mandated programs are on the chopping block. All along, the problem was and is the state funding formula. Now they wake up when its apparent with 3 state monitors in place for the last 3 years to oversee a budget, and yet there is still a deficit of 15 million dollars! In any company they would be fired. The BOE will meet on Monday May 8th and likely vote down the budget.

BOE website
April 27, 2017
Dear Lakewood Residents:
As Board President of Lakewood’s Public School District, I am deeply concerned about the major budget deficit looming over our schools. I am deeply concerned about the damage that looming budget cuts will have on the education of the public school students and I know that my concerns are shared by my fellow board members, administrators, parents, staff, and by all Lakewood residents, including those without children in the public schools.

250 slots open for Pre K

Lakewood Public Schools is now accepting registration for pre- K. The funding officially comes from the state and other grants. Some of the expenses  indirectly cost money and is paid from the local budget. The state should reimburse the district for these costs. It's nice to have grants but the indirect costs such as building maintenance extra staff etc.. take a toll on the local budget. Is the state paying b that too?
