The Explosive Growth of Lakewood, NJ – What Does the Future Hold?

With primary elections coming up in lakewood its important to know what is going on and read about the candidates. by Yitzchak Gershner
Explosive Growth
As has been widely reported in recent years, the Orthodox community of Lakewood has been experiencing tremendous growth. In order to serve the community, hundreds of communal institutions have been established, including synagogues, yeshivas, and kollels.
The community faces an enormous strain in accommodating the unceasing demand on resources, including new housing, schools, services etc. A short tour around town will confirm that the growth is continuing unabated. Housing development is continuing at an accelerated rate, with new neighborhoods constantly being built.
Over-development has placed a strain on already limited resources with skyrocketing property taxes and traffic nightmares among the most dire consequences.
Political Implications
In recent years, the political agenda has slowly evolved to align with the special interests of a select few, while ignoring the plight of the population at large. For many Lakewood residents, their quality of life has been significantly impacted. Roads that were built with several thousand people in mind must now accommodate close to one hundred thousand. Growth is possible but without responsibility and accountability, it will lead to chaos.
A recent proposal that came before the township to build a mall in a highly populated area led to a severe public backlash. Under this proposal, the township would have provided land worth a hundred million dollars to developers at absolutely no cost! This shopping center, complete with a theater, would have created a tremendous strain on the already beleaguered town. Traffic would have soared, competitors would have been destroyed and it would have created an unhealthy outlet for youth -weakening the moral fabric of Lakewood. Due to harsh criticism from the community, the project has been suspended. There is no reassurance that this plan could reappear at a future date.
Real Problems - Real Solutions
Avraham Sharaby and Dovid Gruman are running for the Lakewood committee. Sharaby is running on the Republican side and Gruman is running on the Democrat side.
Sharaby started out in Lakewood in his early twenties studying in Beth Medrash Govoha and is currently working as a real estate broker. He is married with three children and once he is elected committeeman, he has concrete plans to alleviate the financial suffering and improve the quality of life.
He has in the last few years, worked closely with politicians and other groups of interest to fight legislation that would harm the sanctity of marriage and permit assisted suicide. His efforts to protect traditional values have been highly successful and a have led to results.
Dovid Gruman is a third generation Lakewood resident. His grandfather was a talmid of Rav Aharon Kotler, ZT’L. Dovid was born in Lakewood and has been living in Lakewood his entire life. He studied in Beth Medrash Govoha for 9 years and is married with three children. Gruman is proud to have his business headquartered right here in Lakewood’s industrial park.

Power of Gedolim Pictures- Yartzheit of Reb Shaya Kerestirer

This Shabbos 3 Iyar is the Yartzheit of Reb Shaya'la of Kerestirer (1851-1925) one of the famous chasiddic Rebbes from Hungary in the early Twentieth century. Many are making the trip to his Kever and spend Shabbos at his house in northern Hungary. His picture is believed to be a segulah and a amulet of protection. Many stores have his picture to keep away mice.
Here is the The Famous Mouse Story- link.
(see below for story of  how a picture of Rav Aaron Kotler brought someone back to Yiddishkeit)

Reb Shaya Kerestirer
Affectionately known as Reb Shaya'le (Rabbi Yeshaya Steiner of Kerestir), the Kerestirer Rebbe lived around the beginning of the 20th Century. He was a very pious man and extremely humble, always referring to himself in the diminutive (Shaya'le). He was known as a "miraculous" person. His greatest pleasure was to host a very elaborate Melave Malka, the meal that follows Shabbos, on Saturday night. Often he would have his chassidim shecht fresh chickens for his meal.

Other NJ School districts see a rise in busing costs

In New Jersey, a state law requires public school districts to transport non public school students or reimburse parents for transportation costs with aid in lieu. These students' parents are paying taxes but not using public school services. Towns in Ocean and Monmouth county are seeing an increase in busing reimbursements APP reports of sharp increases in Jackson, Brick, Howell, Toms River the article naturally puts the blame on private Lakewood schools. But thats not the case in Brick, were 826 children are transported to nonpublic schools most go to christian or other private schools. Even Jackson which according to the report will be busing 800 kids next year however the superintendent is quoted "When we were at our highest enrollment, there was high aid in lieu (reimbursement) numbers – and they weren’t going to Jewish yeshiva schools.”
But its always fun to blame it all on Lakewood.

TBL- Meet the candidates

Take Back Lakewood Meet the Candidates
On Tuesday June 6th 2017, NJ residents will head to the polls for the primaries. For most in NJ it will mean a chance to have a head start in selecting Governor Christie’s replacement. For those in Lakewood—there is an added element.
If you are happy with the way Lakewood has been run for the last 15 years, please vote for Ray Coles and Mike Delia and stop reading this article. If you feel that Lakewood has been headed in the wrong direction for far too long and would like to see some change—you are in luck.
For far too many years, there were only 2 candidates leaving us with little to no choice. Yes the Vaad backed candidates won—but no one else was really trying. There was a defeatist mentality that there’s no use trying since the vote results seemed predetermined. I’m happy to announce that now, in 2017 is the year that it will all change. There will be choices. Many communities including the thousands of seniors and the orthodox community will finally have a real say in changing the status quo.

Summer Zman begins

The famous chavrusah tumul began in BMG yesterday, in order to start the zman before shabbos.

Lakewood BOE Pres: Blame misplaced in Lakewood schools editorial

In  a response to an outrageous editorial about Lakewood in the APP, Lakewood BOE President Mr. Barry Iann responded with a editorial of his own calling out the paper for its misplaced blame.
"Simply put, the editorial started on the correct trajectory when it recognized that the Lakewood school district is grossly underfunded and that a legislative solution is required to address the problem. However, it took a turn into fiction by blaming the locally elected board. As Lakewood’s three state monitors have repeatedly stated since 2014, Lakewood does not have a fiscal mismanagement problem, Lakewood has a revenue and state funding problem."

Mr. Iann also set the record straight regarding courtesy busing "The only courtesy busing that now exists in Lakewood is for the public school students" which is funded totally by the township.

Where have all the trees gone on Clifton ave?

Guest post by HH
Where have all the trees gone on clifton?
In an effort to clean up the streets and create a more open, brighter atmosphere in which the stores are more visible, the town has finally decided to cut down the trees that are in front of the stores.
The trees were placed there as saplings and ended up growing out of control, blocking storefronts and street lights. Anyone driving down clifton will now notice a more open feeling and those walking at night will feel much safer. Now that we can actually see the downtown, we can work on some other small fixes that can make a big difference.
Thank you to all the public works individuals that did such an excellent job over the Passover holiday, removing the trees and causing no disruption to businesses or drug dealers.

LPD- The Township of Lakewood has set up a Safe Exchange Zone in the parking lot of the Municipal Building located at 231 3rd Street. Because of the high volume of online selling and trading of goods, we think it is important for the safety of our community to have a designated area for these purposes. “We wanted to give the residents of Lakewood a safe location to do exchanges and make purchases that are monitored by the Police Department”, said Chief Gregory Meyer. The Safe Exchange Zone is a well lit area that is under 24 hour surveillance. Read more Here.

List of Stores where Chometz may be purchased right after Pesach

Lakewood kashrus agencies have yet to compile a list. Lakewooders are frustrated and left in the dark not knowing which stores are ok and which ones are problematic. In other cities such as Baltimore, LA, Chicago they each have a kashrus agency whose job is to service the needs of the kehilla. A Kashrus agency is not only about making money it is also about servicing the tzibbur it officially represents.
In addition to all frum stores who sold their chometz before Pesach
Below is a list of national chains Based on lists from  CRC Chicago and star-k in Baltimore. Those lists are for stores in those regions.

Hamodia: Hagaon Harav Yosef Rosenblum, Zt”l

Hamodia (NEW YORK) - Harav Avraham Yosef Rosenblum, zt”l, Rosh Yeshivas Shaarei Yosher, Boro Park, was niftar on Monday night Acharon shel Pesach at the age of 89 in Maimonides Hospital, after an illness.

Rav Rosenblum was sought out for his daas Torah and hadrachah by thousands in the Torah world, famed as one of the spokesmen for Torah Jewry and guiding lights of Torah education in America.

He was a talmid of Harav Aharon Kotler, zt”l, at Beth Medrash Govoha in Lakewood, N.J. Once, when Rav Kotler learned that a certain Rav refused to make an appeal for the Lakewood yeshivah, he wondered aloud, “Who has talmidim like ours?” and he began listing his best talmidim, with Rav Yosef Rosenblum the first name mentioned.

The doctor came in and asked "what do you think you are doing?  If you eat and drink now, your surgery will have to be postponed!" They decided to proceed with the Seder. In the morning the hospital ran additional CT and other scans and the doctors were amazed that the results were clean and no surgery was needed!  The Lakewood askonim had given him the name of someone to call for a ride home if he was discharged on Yomtov (he refused to sign discharge papers so a nurse offered to sign for him).

Residents frustrated with lack of extra Trash Pick up before Pesach

It's an embarrassment to the Lakewood township committee which is predominantly frum to not arrange for an additional garbage pick up erev yomtov instead of making people walk their garbage cans( like a dog )for blocks and blocks.
This is ludicrous any other town or city has additional pick ups erev pesach Lakewood isn't bigger then boro park ,Williamsburg, monsey or Monroe who each service the community with an additional pick up. Perhaps we don't pay enough taxes And this year they're giving out tickets if u dare schlepp it in back of your car Catch 22 gotcha situation.
Unless your one of the VIP citizens who get a personalized xtra pick up erev yomtov. It all boils down to who you know  Like everything else on this town
It's the season to clean house that goes for the township committee as well time for term limits the current boys are way too comfortable!
Get rid of the chometz!

Shameful APP editorial bashing Lakewood community

They did it again the APP who just a year ago published what many felt was an antisemitic editorial, once again is at it, fanning flames of hate against the Lakewood orthodox community. The Article was cleverly posted right before shabbos when the community is occupied. The headline screams "where's outrage over Lakewood? It then refers to two recent "disturbing stories". One is about the potential shortfall in the budget for the school district, something that cant be taken at face value which was issued as a fear mongering piece by an outgoing superintendent. The other story of the head of a private school who as recently indicted, that has nothing to do with the community as a whole.
The Article omits the fact that the orthodox pay very high taxes and do not send their children to public schools. No mention of a few hundred children from other townships who come to Lakewood public schools, costing millions to tax payers. It spews the same garbage about state mandated busing and makes assumptions and allegations that Lakewood private schools are not certified with the state. It calls  to "Offset the undue influence of the Orthodox community on the school board by requiring that a majority of its members have children in the public school system". That is against the constitution and more so using the same logic no senior should either serve on school boards.
Its time the community call out this paper for the hate it spews and spreads against a community.

TBL-Clarification regarding petition

TBL- We are in touch with the editors of NJ 101.5, Shore News and APP and they appear willing to remove their articles with a clarification based on new information that we've come to learn.

Article-The previous post regarding the petition has been removed as portions of it were in error and require clarification. We've pulled the article from our site and we've asked others to do the same as there was some confusion and the resulting online discussion that ensued was based on these misunderstandings.

We had obtained the pictures of the 1,200 signatures and the letter with a write up against the shopping center. We assumed that they were one and the same and posted them together believing that the petition and the write up went hand in hand. We then heard from multiple sources that that was not the case so we pulled the article while clarifying.

Meeting in WG erev Pesach to change street to a one way

As if people have nothing better to do on Erev Pesach some self appointed askanim are calling for  a meeting tomorrow night in Wetgsate to have North Crest place become a one way street. Majority of the residents were never informed or told about this. Mayor Ray Coles, Avrohom Krawiec of the LSTA and representatives of traffic and safety for Lakewood township will be on hand.
Since September, Buses in Westgate have only gone down Hillside blvd picking up kids at the corners. Financially the companies are able to run more routes with minimizing pick up times. Now as a excuse to change North Crest they are dangling the possibility of having school buses return to North Crest. The truth is the bses have done so in many areas of town, not going down side streets and forcing kids to walk to main avenues and collector Roadways. People have complained for 7 months but nothing was done, all of a suden on Erev Pesach they try ramming this thing through. The rest of Westgate will still be waiting go

Lakewood shopping village application will not be heard at tonight's meeting

Take Back Lakewood‏ reports the proposed shopping mall at Cedarbridge  was removed from tonight's agenda at the Planning board meeting. It will Possibly be rescheduled for sometime in May.

TBL- Petition on shopping mall

TBL-We have obtained the petition that was signed by over 1,200 people opposed to the Lakewood Shopping Village - set to be heard at the Planning Board Tuesday night at 6:00. It was signed by many chashuvim including Rabbanim, Ziknei Haposkim, Roshei Chabura and Yungerleit and the efforts were strongly supported by the Rosh Yeshiva Take Back Lakewood.

Another hit piece on the Lakewood community

First it was the WSJ now The Star Ledger joins in with a one sided bias article spewing more propaganda and myths about the Lakewood Orthodox community. Together with the the comments section and you have another article that is full of the continuous distortions, lies and accusations about the community. The favorite one of residents not paying taxes is trumpeted throughout the article and blames the fiscal woes of the school district on Tax exempt properties of the orthodox. The fact is, not only are Lakewood residents paying very high Property taxes with the bulk of it going toward education, but they send their children to private religious schools, so there should be enough funding for the district. The popular belief that somehow Lakewood residents are gaming the system and not paying taxes has been thoroughly debunked see HERE.
Secondly, as pointed out by others, the article fails to mention the lack of State funding despite the public school enrollment up by over 1000 students, the state has not increased its share in the last 4 years due to the funding formula.

Lakewood resident sends letter to WSJ editors

Just sent Leslie Brody and the WSJ Editors the following letter. Everyone please ad your own, this article was nothing less than libel. (author responded to be in touch for future article)

I read your article regarding the Lakewood School District and was severely disappointed. The article is based on lies and misinformation. The fact is that the Lakewood School District doesn’t not provide non-mandated busing to private school children. The fact is that the Lakewood School District does provide busing for non-mandated public school children.
