Halachos for Erev Shabbos Chazon 5777

Halachos for Erev shabbos in the 9 days (Based partially on Rabbi Felder Sefer)
-One may cut their Nails for Shabbos since it is not shavua shechal bo.
-One may polish their shoes only with liquid polish according to most poskim.
-One may brush a hat on erev shabbos since it is not considered washing clothes.

-Showering is a machlokes if you are allowed kol gufo, the minhag is to be  meikel but to use warm water.

-Tasting food that is fleishigs, some poskim- Mekor Chayim 551:9 writes "A woman who needs to taste the Shabbos foods while cooking may do so on Friday afternoon after midday" others hold you can taste but not swallow and must spit it out. (Shmiras Shabbos Khilchasa 42:61 on Erev Shabbos during the Nine Days, you may also taste the food. However, one should try not to swallow food containing meat ingredients)

-Children may eat meat before Shabbos up to 2 hours before the zman according to Rav Moshe Feinstein in Igros Moshe, others (Eliyahu Rabba) hold they may start even from Chatzos. Chatzos, Midday in Lakewood, NJ 1:03 pm

-If one makes an early Shabbos on Erev Shabbos Chazon he may eat Meat after  the Plag. Lakewood Plag is 6:44 pm.

Letter: להחזיר עטרה ליושנה

This is a letter given to me to forward by a very choshuve member of our community that told me he is not ready to speak out publicly yet. He would like these sentiments to be known anonymously.

Please Take Back Lakewood

It is with a heavy heart and tears in my eyes that I pen these thoughts.
I arrived in Lakewood nearly 40 years ago and never thought that I would ever co have the need to share these feelings with you. I have been a proud member of the Lakewood Yeshivah community for nearly 40 years and sadly what was once a real IHR HATORAH with the ideals and Hashkofos of Reb Ahron ZTL has become a commercialized IHR HATORAH using its very crown and glory to advance monetary gain and financial power. Please don't get me wrong, I am all in favor of financial gain. However I am not a Yeshivah and my job is to grow my business to its greatest potential. The job of the manhigim of BMG is to grow the yeshiva to its greatest heights in Torah and avodas Hashem, while focusing on the great mesorah and Torah Hashkofos of Hagaon Hatzadik Reb Ahron ZTL.
Ironically my suggestion to "Take Back Lakewood" is not addressed to the masses and to those who write in the local blogs.

Camp Traffic

This morning's carpool to Day camp to over 45 minutes. Traffic around Lakewood was horrible the main thoroughfares were backed up Cedarbridge, New Hampshire James, Pine,  County line and of course good ol Rt 9. There was construction on James and on Cedarbridge. Can the Township officials arrange for construction to take place off peak and not in the busy morning rush or when everyone is going to work or driving kids to camp.

FAA- Township Updates Website After Hiding Resolution from Public

From FAA  cover up? the screen shots don't lie. The Lakewood Township updated it website yesterday posting a link to the final agenda for the meeting that took place on November 10, 2016. Until yesterday the draft version was the only reference for the meeting.  A Resolution giving township land to CHEMED for a 50 year $1 lease was missing and not published prior to the meeting.  After it was uncovered the township retroactively made it appear as if it was on the website the day before on November 9 , 2016. This was no clerical error it's pretty obvious what went on.

FAA: Lakewood Township Secretly Gave Property To Developer

From the First Amendment Activist  website- Claim: Major Corruption in Lakewood Township. the FAA reports town secretly (Illegally) gave property to developer A resolution was passed in November 2016 leasing the  property to CHEMED from Lakewood township for 50 years at the cost of $1. The resolution on the agenda number 11, was not put on the public agenda at the time, see resolution below. The committee voted on it and Menashe Miller abstained. Local residents complained yesterday about the construction going on asking the township officials if there were any permits and how they took care of the environmental issues. all correspondence below from FAA Website.

TBL- 5 Story Buildings with no parking - Court Order

Take Back Lakewood
The Township Committee has messed up again!!

Because the Township Committee failed to act responsibly, now a large 5 story building will be built on the busy corner of 1st and Clifton with ZERO parking spaces instead of 389 spaces!

The current ordinance allows a 5 story building to be built in the downtown (B-2 zone) with no parking spaces provided!!

Within the past year, 3-4 applicants sought to make use of this loophole to build large scale office buildings with no parking. In March 2016, an application for a 5 story building at the NW corner of 1st and Clifton with no parking was denied by the Planning Board. The applicant proposed a 5 store building totaling 94,975 square feet. In any other area in town, a building of this size would require 389 parking spots. In the congested parking deprived downtown - 0!!!

WABC Reports on The Lightning Strike in Lakewood.

LAKEWOOD, New Jersey (WABC) -- It was a morning of wild weather across the
area, with heavy rain, gusty wind and thunderstorms. Central and southern New Jersey were especially hard hit, including a transformer fire in New Brunswick that closed roads for hours and a lightning strike in Lakewood the blew a hole in a family's roof. Neighbors heard the deafening boom. "It was like a flash of white light in front of me," neighbor Adina Rubin said. "It was really loud."

The owner of the home was startled awake not by the thunder, but by an alarm and the slight smell of smoke. "I went out, I didn't really see anything," Yisroel Minzer said. "I saw there were a lot of brush fires around, I thought maybe it was because of that, maybe it's an oven. I was so in a daze. I was sleeping, so I just dozed the alarm and I just went back to sleep."

He was named for his illustrious great-grandfather who was niftar just over a year before he was born.

"Those who allegedly cheated the system are extreme outliers"

The Agudah, Lakewood Vaad and other local organizations held a community symposium to "clarify" and offer guidance with govt benefit programs in response to recent arrests that targeted the Lakewood community. According to the APP  More than 1,000 people showed up at The Cheder ballroom. The report quotes:
"This is not the time for fright," a member of Lakewood's Vaad, or Jewish council, said during the seminar. "This is the time to look at yourself and say 'am I eligible.'"
Weisberg said the vast majority of people on welfare in town need it. Those who allegedly cheated the system are extreme outliers, he said.

"There are bad actors and bad apples," he said shortly after the arrests. "A lot of this is not, most of this is not."
APP reports Mark Harris, the former U.S. attorney, offered guidance to anyone cowed by the recent arrests. People make mistakes about taxes and benefits all the time," he said. "Making a mistake is not a crime. Being negligent is not a crime. "The crime is to misrepresent...to intentionally do something wrong."
The Lakewood Rosh Yeshiva Rav Dovid Schustal graced the dais.

Last night at the meeting residents came out in force to oppose the masterplan committee recommendations that called for more Density and other zoning changes. Police were on hand throughout the duration of the meeting to keep the peace. Residents from the senior communities reacted to the reports that the township released only hours before the meeting. They were upset over the recommendation to permit schools anywhere on Lakewood and the change to zoning near their communities. They lectured the board that there is a higher authority than the almighty dollar and this is not what Hashem wants. One resident questioned if Lakewood is a growing city why are there ads in the weekly papers begging and luring Residents from other  towns to move to Lakewood. Another asked the committee if they will take responsibility when family members will get hurt in accidents caused by the density traffic. A friend of the developers got up and defended the actions of the board and called out all those in attendance for showing disrespect to the planning boards there are bad developers just as there are bad seniors, there is bad in every group.

Lakewood Mayor Responds to Criticism at Meeting

Lakewood Mayor responds angrily after resident questioned the lack of leadership from township officials following the recent events in Lakewood.  see video below minute 39:40. The resident was upset at the Township committee for not defending the reputation of Lakewood over the last few weeks. The Mayor said he spoke to various media outlets and that 99.9 percent of Lakewood residents get up early and work their tale off to support their families. Here are some quotes from the mayor during the raids:

“It really bothers me when people take advantage of programs like this,” Lakewood Mayor Ray Coles told the Asbury Park Press. “I have a waiting list of Section 8 (housing assistance) vouchers of maybe 2,000 families that really need it. I hate to see things like this.”

“To see something like this happen is just like a knife in the heart. There’s so many people out there who need the help. When something like this happens, it turns people against everybody,”

The mayor asked: “I just want people not to jump to conclusions, not to draw conclusions about an entire community, an entire township, based on the actions of a few people. We’re a township of probably over 100,000 folks, and no matter how hard you try, you’ll always going to have people who will take advantage of a system.”

Is Lakewood township Discriminating Against Private School Students

Once again the Lakewood Township committee gave another million dollars of tax money for Non Mandated programs to public school students. This time it went to the athletic leagues that were cut from the school district budget. Previously The Lakewood township committee sponsored the courtesy busing costs for all public school students while Private school students have to pay a $150 per child fee. The LSTA that controls the private school busing only got money that was intended for the mandated busing of private school students, any extra money, they were allowed to use to cover the courtesy portion but they are still charging a fee.

What Legal right does the township have to pay for non mandated busing of public school students and not cover the cost to the private school students for their non mandated busing. You cant give one sector and ignore the other. If they are paying for busing they should pay for everyone, it must be across the board.
The township has a surplus of money and is spending it on non mandated programs why cant they cover the busing costs of the private school kids whose parents are paying high property taxes.. This is discrimination.

NJ EZ Pass Tag Holders Ripped off at NYC Bridges and Tunnels?

TRENTON, New Jersey (WABC) -- A new study finds that drivers with E-ZPass tags issued by non-New York-based agencies are being charged the cash rate at New York bridges and tunnels run by the MTA, instead of receiving the E-ZPass discount. "

The situation is worse at the Verrazano Narrows Bridge, where AAA found the out-of-town E-ZPass/cash rate (or license plate rate at the newly cashless facility) is $17, versus $11.52 for an MTA E-ZPass."

They Speak Only For Themselves

Leadership means protecting the flock and defending them. It means you don't look out for yourself at all and you are there 100 percent for those you claim to represent. At the moment of truth they failed. When a leader looks out for himself and their personal interests its impossible to care for and to go to bat for the flock. The self appointed spokesman failed miserably. Instead of standing up to what was a witch hunt and a deliberate attempt to target a community, they admitted guilt, validated the charges and threw everyone under the bus just to deflect attention from themselves. They went to the press and gave statements calling innocent couples as "bad apples" who bend rules, they added salt to an open wound.

Lakewood Township To Give 1 Million Dollars To The BOE

Need a loan or extra money? the Lakewood township has a surplus of money and they plan to give $1 million dollars to the Lakewood Board of Education. Not only are tax payers paying for the School tax but now the township is giving away money from the municipal portion of property taxes to the Board of Ed. It is the states obligation to provide the funding but since the township collected so much tax money its only right that they give it to the boe. There is a resolution for the Upcoming Township committee meeting  to grant the money

"Resolution Of The Township Of Lakewood, County Of Ocean, State Of New Jersey, Providing School Funding For Lakewood Board Of Education For The 2017-18 School Year".

The BOE initially asked for a loan but officials said they cant loan and will give a grant instead. The money is expected to restore athletic programs that were cut from the budget. According to a report in the APP Committeeman Lichtenstein and Mayor Coles said they will approve the money, and Attorney Michael Inzelbuch said it will sway him to come back as board attorney if the loan is granted, but the state has to find a wa to provide more funding to the district.

Correspondence Between Lakewood Resident and Professor Heilman

The APP quoted extensively from Professor Samuel Heilman. I sent the professor an e-mail to question some of those quotes, and to his credit, he responded immediately. Below, is the correspondence between myself and the professor.

To Professor Samuel Heilman,

I read some quotes that were ascribed to you in the Asbury Park Press. I know that the press tends can on occasion, take quotes out of context, so I do not know if the quotes reflect your actual views or not. What I do know, is that those quotes do not portray an accurate picture of American Orthodox Jewry in the United States, or Lakewood. As a resident of Lakewood for the past 20 years, and an Orthodox Jew, I would like to clarify some if the points that were raised.

I quote from the APP “The Orthodox members ………. separate themselves from American laws and societal norms, Heilman said.” This is factually incorrect, Orthodox Law clearly states that “the law of the land, is the law”. It is true that Orthodox Jewry has laws in addition to U.S. laws, however that cannot be considered a separation, as Orthodox Jewish Law, is purposely inclusive of U.S. Law.

In regards to “separate themselves from ….societal norms” It would be interesting to know which specific societal norms you were referring

Papers Decide What To Report

Radio host Judi Franco on 101.5  comments on the press coverage regarding Lakewood.

NJ101.5-That might not seem clear when the some written media outlets breathlessly cover these arrests as though they’ve never happened before And delighted as they are to report them, please understand that some newspapers have a long-standing journalistic love affair with stories that involve orthodox Jews. Rare are the stories of this group’s charity, community service, or hard work, though. Some papers just have penchant for front-page, bold-type, above-the-fold “Bad News About Jews” (Hey, kind of a catchy slogan, guys! You ever think about that?).
