Lakewood Travel Advisory for Shabbos Chanukah

Lakewood Chaveirim reached out to Hamodia to share the following message with the community:

Shabbos Chanukah is one of the busiest travel times for Lakewood families. Hundreds of families make their way out of Lakewood, heading to Brooklyn, Monsey, upstate etc. Chaveirim urges travelers to take preventive action to avoid much heartache, as in the past years many have not had such pleasant Shabbos Chanukah memories.

Tips:
-Avoid Squankum road, as many travelers leaving Lakewood use Squankum Road as their exit point, it’s a one lane road that cannot accommodate another few hundred cars. Alternatives would be Cedarbridge avenue, County line road- Lanes Mill Rd., Route 70, or Route 9 to the 195 East. All these will take you to the Garden State Parkway.

5th night of Chanukah minhag to give Tzedaka

The minhag is to give Chanukah gelt to aniyim on the fifth night. The simple reason since the 5th night never falls out on shabbos. More and more Lakewood mishpachos among us are struggling financially. People can't afford the basics. In many areas and developments it's common for the gabbei tzedaka or rav to have residents knocking on the door unable to pay the monthly rent or mortgage. The high property taxes and cost of living is taking its toll on the tzibbur. We have many local tzedakos who help for shabbos, yom tov, simchas, camp etc.. But the day to day living is a struggle even in a two income household.  On this night of Chanukah think of a relative or neighbor who maybe treading water or drowning. Not always can you tell from the outside, people are embarrassed and put on a facade. Ask around and give tzedaka bderech kavod. Let's help and look after our own.

Roshei Yeshiva issue letter about Play

The days of Chanukah are meant for reaching greater heights and illuminating ourselves from the light of Torah. We are asking the bnei Torah of Lakewood to not participate in entertainment that resembles Chukos Hagoyim..... and not to partake in a play that is currently showing in Newark, NJ during these days of Chanuka. We should be zoche to a new light that shines on Tzion Amen.

Washington, DC – U.S. Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ) issued the following statement:

“One-sided resolutions in the UN Security Council that isolate Israel in the international community will not move us closer to a two-state solution and to peace. We need direct negotiations between Israel and the Palestinian people, and I urge the Administration do everything in its power to stop this resolution from moving forward.”

TBL- What to tell the township Commitee today

TBL- There will be a Township Committee meeting at 3:00 PM today Thursday December 22nd. While it is difficult to attend in the middle of the day, if you are able to, please come to the meeting. Remind the Committeemen that while the public has been making their voice heard for the past few months, some on the committee have done nothing to even attempt to fix some of the problems that concern everyone.

-Tell the Committee that we want Mike Delia to be the mayor as previously planned.

-Tell the Committee that we actually want them to do something in the coming year to fix the planning and zoning boards and that we want them to work with the community to pass ordinances that will fix some of the faulty ordinances that are being abused by developers.

A Letter From Jackson, New Jersey

Hamodia A Letter From Jackson, New Jersey
By Rabbi Shmuel Bloom
"That was my thought as I visited my daughter who recently moved from Lakewood proper to a neighboring town, Jackson. When she moved there about half a year ago, there were no shomer Shabbos families in her immediate neighborhood. My son-in-law had to walk 25 minutes to the nearest shul. The many families who have moved in since have now required two new shuls to be created — one across the street from my children. Wherever you look in Lakewood and the environs you see the phenomenal growth of a Torah community."
Tuesday, December 20, 2016  כ' כסלו תשע"ז
We are a nation that lives and thrives on miracles.
Eretz Yisrael today is a prime example. There is no way this small nation surrounded by enemies from within and without could exist in today’s Middle East without relying on open miracles.

No township Menorah in downtown Lakewood

Howell, Jackson and many towns across NJ have placed a public menorah at town hall this year for the holiday season but Lakewood seems to not have figured it out. After receiving a complaint last year the township removed the menorah from towns square. The story made headlines and was covered by the national media. A Menorah was placed at the entrance of the Lakewood bus station by the center for Jewish life.

Still a yeshiva town

As the town grows and more people move in it no longer is a exclusive yeshiva community. There were pictures recently circulating on social media, of a birthday party held in Lakewood for a 1 year old. It was not your ordinary party but it was a lavish event with a party planner and the works. This is an example of something new to Lakewood. Yet, it highlights the growth and transformation of what Lakewood has now become. Its a metropolis like Brooklyn and other major Jewish cities, open to all backgrounds all colors and stripes. The Asbury Park Press ran a story on Lakewood with the title Lakewood goes Lux pointing to the high end trendy luxurious lifestyle that now exists in Lakewood. On the other hand you have thousands of famalies and Bnei Yeshiva who live with simplicity, many of whom who are struggling, surviving from pay check to pay check. Its still the home of the largest yeshiva in America with thousands of youngeleit of high caliber learning and devoting their live to Torah and avodah. It is a city open to all.

Dr. Shanik- Zika Travel ban still in effect for Miami Dade county until next month

In a Letter dated December 12, 2016 Lakewood pediatrician Dr. Shanik wrote there is still a travel ban to Certain areas of Florida.
"While there have been no new cases of Zika Virus in the last 45 days there is still a partial ban on travel to Miami Dade county for at least the next month. This still means that no women of child bearing age and/or their husband should travel to Miami Dade county, Florida due to the possibility of contracting the Zika virus, also anyone  that travels to that area can bring the virus back and cause further spreading locally.... All other areas of Florida are safe for travel as of now. DR Shanik & DR. Heimowitz."

Cold weather brings more cars to Clustered bus stops in Lakewood

The cold weather is here but for the Lakewood kids it means driving by car to the bus stops. The new busing system eliminated the close to home bus stops forcing parents to cluster at the main roads. That made parents, having to schlepp little babies and all other children while waiting for the bus. The freezing cold weather now has more parents driving to the bus stops so the kids can wait in the warm cars until the bus comes. This also delays the buses, since it takes longer now at each stop as kids come out of the cars to the bus. While much progress was made there are still kids without bus routes.

Ray Coles to be mayor of Lakewood for 2017

unconfirmed Report:  VAAD gives Mike Delia the boot. Puts in Democrat Ray Coles to do as they say. It was understood that Mike Delia would be our next mayor . But it seems that his agreement with take back lakewood and those that want to curb development did not agree with the VAAD. In an unprecedented move ,after a meeting at voting commission member yisroel schenkolwlewskis house ,Mike Delia was told that he will not be the mayor this year. It was decided that Democrat Ray Coles Will be the mayor. Even though the Democrats are not the majority it seems that the VAAD decides that they will make sure that the mayor is someone that will toe the line. Somebody is running scared.

Lakewood Fire election budget addition passes by a landslide

Lakewood Fire Election  Budget additions pass by a landslide. 50-Yes vs. 35-No.  A total of 85 votes. After much publicity in the local media the voters have spoken clearly!!
Ht:TBL

Lakewood an exception to national trend

Lakewood leads NJ in median size family ka''h.
from a report in  nj.com ''A great deal has been written about the changing dynamics of today's families, driven in part by the differing interests of the millennial generation. Fewer people are getting married -.. Married couples are not necessarily having children and more children are living with a single parent than was the case a half-century ago. Large families with multiple children are becoming ever more rare. but there are some places in the state where families are much bigger.

Take back Lakewood -the saga continues

Post From Take Back Lakewood website.
When a builder purchased the shopping center at Chestnut and River he wanted to turn it into a popular shopping center. The problem was that there's barely any parking. His solution was to buy a neighboring plot of land that is owned by the Township.

When the Township has a lot of land for sale, the sales are usually open to the public and there is an auction at the Township meeting. The bidding often increases the price significantly and earns extra money for the township. In this case, the builder did not want the lot to go for a public auction where it would cost him more and he may lose the bid.

Questions about the fire election today in Lakewood

polls open until 9 pm. at 316 River Avenue.
Questions:
Why were absentee ballots not sent out to all Lakewood registered voters?

Why was this not put on the November ballot?

Why can't this vote be put together with  the February fire district elections?

Why are these elections not held in town hall so it's easier to vote with more parking?

The answer is very simple, This is done in a way that people will not come and vote against it.

Lakewood Fire elections today no word from the Vaad

Today there will be elections at the LFD asking the public to spend more money for capital improvement projects. There was very little publicity about it. The public can go vote at 316 River Ave corner RT 9 and James street at the fire house from 2-9 pm. The Lakewood Vaad which usually makes it their business advising the public about elections and which way to vote, is silent. The vaad lately places some self promotional PR in local media about affordable housing which has been approved more 10 years ago and about the property tax reassessment.  It did meddle into the fire district elections for commissioner last year putting up a last minute candidate, the vaad lost. Why the silence now when the LFD raised the tax rate and looks to spend even more??

Township puts stop work order at construction site

Blog post on First Amendment activist site  submitted via comment-
On 12/6/16, the owner of the plaza on the corner of Chestnut St & Route 9 asked the Planning Board to approve additional parking at the site. The board and the public questioned the fact that the bottom floor is not approved for retail use although the applicant is fixing the place for retail use and actually has a signed lease already. The applicant’s attorney claimed that he has the permits to do so without detail. Due to this and other concerns the board pushed the application to another date.

‘Mamme Fuhn Klal Yisrael’

Article in Hamodia newspaper by Esther Moskowitz

Picture a middle-aged woman, living in England near many married children and grandchildren, reaping nachas from them and comfortably ensconced in the place she had lived her whole life. Her husband is a successful Mashgiach in the nearby yeshivah. She is a well-known mechaneches, frequently delivering shiurim for the women of the town.

Suddenly, there’s a change in plans. They are being asked to relocate, across the ocean, to far-off America.  How does she feel about this? “It’s good,” she tells her son. “Tatty has an opportunity for more harbotzas haTorah.”
And so, Rebbetzin Miriam Salomon left her beloved Gateshead, left most of her family behind, and moved to Lakewood for her husband’s sake and for the sake of Klal Yisrael.

Let’s rewind a little, though. Harav Nosson Wachtfogel, zt”l, the original Mashgiach of Bais Medrash Govoha, was in his 90s, and was thinking ahead to the future of BMG and the position he would one day vacate. One night he had a dream, telling him that his successor was in England. After some investigation, he discovered Harav Mattisyahu Salomon, shlita, who was then the Mashgiach of the Gateshead yeshivah. He felt that this was the person he was looking for.

So began a new period in Lakewood, and among world Jewry.

Rav Mattisyahu Salomon became the beloved “Tatte fun Klal Yisrael” and his Rebbetzin became the “Mamme fun Klal Yisrael.” Harav Yeruchim Olshin, Rosh Yeshivah of BMG, said in his hesped for

After Raising Fire Tax they are asking for even more tax money- Elections next week

You may not know but The Lakewood Fire Department will have elections HERE this coming Monday December 12 from 2-9 pm asking Tax payers to approve close to 200k for capital improvement projects. This comes, just after they raised the fire tax this year from 0.058 to 0.070. Lakewood taxpayers resoundingly voted NO on the budget and rejected it. The Board spent a lot of money this year, (installing Wifi in the buildings) there is no reason to give them a blank check. The budget for 2016 after it was defeated stands at  $6,168,251.00 Why do they need more money? View 2016 Budget HERE. After the budget was voted down by taxpayers the township reduced expenditures by 238K now they are asking for another 190k. The Vaad last time said to vote NO on the budget what will they say now? Also the Fire commissioners have not posted any minutes of the meetings since February of this year.

Winning $1 Million dollar lottery ticket "Mistakenly" sold in Lakewood NJ

Foxnews-A mistakenly sold lottery ticket has earned a New Jersey couple $1 million.
State lottery officials say 70-year-old Dante Castillo usually picks his own numbers. But when the Manchester man bought some tickets for last Thursday’s Cash4Life jackpot at Sam’s Day & Nite Food Store located on 1200 River Avenue in Lakewood, the clerk accidentally sold him a ticket with computer-generated numbers. That ticket proved to be the winner, matching the five main numbers drawn but not the cash ball number.

Lakewood Tax dollars: LIC LDC UEZ

Lakewood Township proposes to merge the LIC (Lakewood industrial commission) with the LDC (Lakewood Development corporation) Those free networking seminars and many other commissions in the Township of Lakewood operate with tax monies from local tax payers. Reporter from NJ news and views give details of spending, how funds are allocated and who gets them.
NJ News & Views
"At the September 6, 2016 LDC meeting, members approved a resolution for $$65,000 in sub-recipient grant funding for the Lakewood Community Services Corporation (LCSC) Business to Business Networking 3 program".

During his public comments at the September 15, 2016 committee workshop meeting, Coles said that UEZ funds were starting to dwindle. As a result, he wanted to once again merge the LDC with the LIC. Coles said that the township's UEZ program was separated from LIC oversight years ago.

"A local developer said only the LIC has the right to negotiate the sale of (public) land, so they became separate," he said. The LDC is a non-profit organization that was incorporated on October 2, 1997. While the LIC has the authority to sell and lease public land for redevelopment, the LDC has the authority to purchase privately-owned property for redevelopment.

Coles also said he supported the merger in order to reduce the number of professionals each agency hired through duplication of services. He said most of the LDC services were now provided by the Lakewood Community Services Corporation (LCSC). The LDC is not the only Lakewood agency to fund the service organization's work.

Six years ago, the LCSC turned to the LIC for award of a $40,000 grant after the state UEZA reportedly reduced available UEZ funding for the non-profit organization's English as a Second Language (ESL) program in February 2010. The state took the action after LDC members held an illegal vote in executive session at their January 2010 meeting on a resolution for action that LDC Chairman Moshe Z. Weisberg opposed.
