Busing now a factor when applying for school in Lakewood

Its registration season season now and parents are applying to schools.
What used to be a non issue is now a major factor for parents deciding on where to send their kids to school in Lakewood. Since not all schools have busing, parents are applying to the schools that do have. The Larger schools in particular have busing since they got the first bids from the LSTA. The smaller schools are no guarantee to have busing many still dont. Some schools arranged private transportation or  parents are car pooling, but in general its the smaller schools that will have a harder time with applications do to the lack of busing. For those living in Jackson its a headache too and people might start looking at distance when choosing a school.

Website posts all Lakewood Planning and Zoning board applications

First Amendment Activist blog HERE features all current applications in Lakewood sent to the planning and zoning boards. Residents can look up the actual site plans and map details including address location and how many proposed units. The township website lists applications with vague details only block and lot numbers, in many cases leaving out important information the public should know about. In some cases neighbors are not notified of pensding construction plans in their area. In addition to the website there is a youtube channel to see videos of the actual board meetings in the township.

Our Representatives Let Us Down in Voting to Legalize Assisted Suicide

Letter Jewishlink
I would like to express my opinion regarding one of the biggest new threats to America and America’s Jewish community, which is the legalization and normalization of assisted suicide around the United States. Assisted suicide is the suicide of a patient affected by the taking of lethal drugs provided by a doctor for this purpose. This total lack of regard for human life is the anathema of Torah Judaism.  (watch Video Here)
Two sessions ago, four assembly members sponsored the first New Jersey assisted suicide bill. Unfortunately, two of those four represent the bulk of

Lakewood BOE to look into out of district students

At the BOE meeting last week a resident asked the board what they are doing about out of district students attending public schools in Lakewood. The claim is that the bi-lingual nature of the Lakewood public school is attractive to outsiders, with students from nearby towns coming to Lakewood schools. Read HERE. The board responded by contracting a address verification firm that will look into the matter and match up all students with the home address they provide upon registering. The numbers simply dont add up, how does enrollment of public school kids keep going up when the community is moving out of Lakewood. There is no set amount but it could be in the hundreds, in addition there may be students who are no longer in the district but still officially enrolled on the books.

TBL: Explaining misconceptions

Take Back Lakewood post.
See our ad in the voice on page 261. In the public forum on page 100, the Zoning Board Chairman was interviewed. He said that Lakewood is a pro-growth town and there is nothing wrong with growth. He blamed the state, county and township for not upgrading our roads. He said that if the township starts developing paper streets then then state will see that we are serious and they will be forced to widen Route 9 (huh??). This is a common deflection routine practiced here. Blame the State. If only they widened route 9 everything would be fine! Don't fall for this. The blame lies right here. Everyone keeps on saying that with the proper infrastructure we can have growth. Well, since we don't have the proper infrastructure, why are so many large projects in crowded neighborhoods getting approved?

Lakewood township reassessment for 2017 information on Tax impact

Proposed value of all properties in Lakewood for 2017 $9,659,250,00
went up 3 billion dollars from the current $6,451,459,200
Detail on the new tax rates:
HERE

Search HERE - lists 15,000 of the 25,000 properties in LKWD and how much they were assessed at.

They provided a worksheet where you can calculate new tax, HERE

Basically, the old rate was 2.93. Since Lakewood properties overall went up by 50%, if your value went up by more than 50% you have and increase and less than 50% you have a decrease. Approx new rate will be 1.957 subject to change based on 2017 budget. In the excel – enter old and new values into the first 2 yellow cells and the rest calculates automatic.

באש ובמים - עם ישראל חי

Singer Avrohom Fried writes about the fires burning in Eretz Yisrael the words of a recent song come to mind.  ( listen to song below)

Why such a short school day?

The Friday schedule in Lakewood for some of the girls schools is getting shorter and shorter. Girls are going to school for just about 1 hour on Friday. The buses dont get there before 9:40 and at 11:15 girls are getting dismissed! Yes busing is an issue, but its not fair for the kids and for the parents who now have to shorten their Friday workday even more. Something has got to give. The overall Friday schedule in Lakewood should be changed.

I wish to express my heartfelt appreciation and thanks to our Jewish brethren in Boro Park, Flatbush and Lakewood for responding to our call and expressing the voice of Torah and Yiddishkeit in the Presidential elections.
We gave our President-Elect Donald Trump our overwhelming support. Seventy percent of the Boro Park-Flatbush community (our Assembly District 48 gave Donald Trump the most votes in Brooklyn) and 79 percent of the Lakewood community cast their votes for Donald Trump.

We must continue to express our support for our new President-elect. He is

Letter: Looking for info on the Lakewood- Manhattan commute

Dear Fellow Lakewooders,
I am a Lakewood resident who recently got a job in Manhattan. I am new to the commuting schedule and have no familiarity with Lakewood-Manhattan busses. If anyone can provide information and contact info for such daily transportation between Lakewood and Manhattan, both ways, it would greatly appreciated. Also, if there is information about davening Shacharis, that would helpful.
Also, perhaps readers can advise whether it is better to take a bus than to drive myself, and what the cost considerations are. Other helpful info would be with regard to driving to the end of Jersey, parking somewhere there, and then taking a train into Manhattan, and whether that is a viable option.
Thank you and tizku l'mitzvos.

Take Back Lakewood: A progress report

TBL- B''H we have accomplished a lot in a little over a month. When developers are starting to change the applications that they submit because they know they will be rejected we know we have really come a long way. We have an open communication channel with all of the township committee members, and we are actively pursuing things behind closed doors to stop this at a larger level instead of having to fight every application at the meeting. We actually did start a fundraiser page but I haven't been pushing it at all and it really is time to start. I have been self-funding this until now, but to reach out on a grander scale we need to get a lawyer involved and we need to communicate better to the community so that people know what we have done and how they can help. We will be making a big push to get a lot of people to come to

Lakewood residents get reassessment letters Property Taxes shoot up

Lakewood homeowners received their new tax bill following the reassessment and shockingly but not surprisingly Taxes have gone up a significant amount. Homes were assessed to reflect current market values in many cases of inflated home prices. To soften the blow township officials claim they may lower the tax rate to even things out, buy that has not happened in a while. BOE taxes and Fire district taxes went up this year too. The Fire dept is asking for another increase next month. The big question continues to be asked WHER IS ALL THE MONEY GOING???? So many new homes built bringing in new ratables why is there not enough money?

Officials shift blame on Lakewood traffic

An article in The Voice of Lakewood discusses the Traffic situation in Lakewood. Residents from  across town were interviewed about the traffic in their areas. Township officials too, gave their two cents, but ignored and left out the real factors, instead, they blame the state  the county or other govt red tape. No one took blame for vacating streets that were designed to have a proper grid with streets leading into one another. No one mentioned the through streets that were closed off such as Arlington, Kennedy, streets off Pine and Oak that should have been open to through traffic. No one mentioned that high density that is adding thousands of cars to streets that are not built for it. No one mentioned that the much needed light by Pine street and MLK should be put up, or the traffic light that's already installed on Pine and Avenue of the states is still not activated because of special interest. But, we are told that our elected officials are working very hard and doing all they can to alleviate the problem. Its typical political double talk pretend you care while you look the other way and blame others for what you have created.

Lakewood township now encouraging public to attend masterplan committee meetings after public outcry

"They confiscated my property and shouldn't be trusted," said Levy, who lives in Lakewood, New Jersey. "I will never use their services again." AP
The story was first posted on DansDeals where Google has suspended the accounts of users for violating its terms and conditions. Several people who recently bought Google's new Pixel phone on behalf of a New Hampshire dealer are now suffering that punishment after the company detected their online purchases and judged they violated its terms of service.

APP: Lakewood leaders, Orthodox voters were looking for a candidate that will uphold conservative values

Questioned about Donald Trump's White House pick of Stephen Bannon that he has anti semitic views, Lakewood community leaders tell the APP "I don’t think the voters bought into the narrative that the campaign in any way was anti-Semitic, nor that Steve Bannon was anti-Semitic," said Rabbi Aaron Kotler, president and chief executive officer of the Lakewood-based Beth Medrash Govoha yeshiva. The article also discusses the large votes for Trump in Lakewood "in Lakewood, it's not a surprising number," said Rabbi Avi Schnall, director of Agudath Israel of America's New Jersey office. "A candidate is a candidate, what people say beyond what the candidate represents, that’s not the candidate, that's not who anyone votes for." Read more at APP.com

TVOL- Planning chairman" Vacating paper streets ruins the infrastructure in Lakewood"

An interview in last weeks issue of the Voice of Lakewood, The chairman of the Lakewood township planning board explains how Growth in itself is a good thing but there is something wrong if there is no infrastructure to support it. Additionally, he explains the planing board can not deny an application due to the poor infrastructure in town if the applicant is not asking for any variances.

Lakewood Trump vote, irks the "elitists"

They know better. It didn't take long for the elitists and leftists among us to wag the finger at the Lakewood community for their support of Donald Trump. Trump got 72.9% of the Lakewood vote, Clinton: 23.8%. An op ed posted on Cross- Currents website just cant understand how we had the chutzpah to vote with our own minds and not listen and cow tow to the narrow mindedness of the holier than though sophisticated self appointed aristocrats. How do we as a community vote for a menuval for a person whose public persona is that of a bully etc. To quote from the op-ed:
"the far greater concern is the outpouring of Orthodox Jewish support for Trump. It is reliably reported that seventy percent of the voters in Lakewood supported him and there are statements in the names of leading Roshei Yeshiva supporting him".
How can we not listen to these know it all elitists? Others joined in to, even the Blogging Beach Rabbi was shocked, he was crying! The article continues:

There needs to be an explanation as to why a people who are commanded, Kedoshim Tih’yu, embraced a person who just about in every way possible has been the antithesis of sanctity. It is no answer or explanation that Hillary

“Bingo” a Kosher Costco Concept opens in Boro Park, plans for Lakewood area store

Ger Rebbe son
As reported back in March HERE “Bingo” a Kosher Costco Concept which has stores in Israel under the Osher Ad label opened its first store in the USA. The Brooklyn store is located in Boro Park at the former Pathmark location at 60th street and 13th avenue. A report in Koshertoday.com says the store will target the price conscious buyers. "Although the store will be huge and spacious, it will target the price conscious and the bulk buyers, especially the many large families in the area and beyond. Industry sources told Kosher Today that the store, to be called “Bingo” has already negotiated mega deals with kosher manufacturers, including several who agreed to private label for Bingo. The store is set to have a Costco (without the membership) look rather than the appearance of the numerous high-end kosher independent stores that currently dot many Orthodox neighborhoods"

Lakewood Zoning board backs off imposing recording guidelines, leaves it up to the township committee to decide

At last nights ZB meeting/TBL
At the zoning board last night the ZB attorney and board chairman reiterated they are not camera shy and have nothing against anyone recording the meetings, they understand its anyone's right to come and record either with a video or microphone and anyone is invited to do so including First amendment activist. Originally the board was going to adopt new recording guidelines that will allow taping of meetings while at the same time protecting attorney client privilege which is the opinion of the board attorney.
The board backed off at the end after discussing (was contacted) the issue with the Lakewood township attorney and decided to let the matter be dealt with by the township committee. If the committee feels the need to set guidelines it can adopt an ordnance to implement guidelines and restrictions.

Response from First Amendment Activist to Lakewood zoning board attorney

First Amendment activist responds to the Zoning board attorney regarding new guidelines to limit recordings at board meetings letter posted on the Politicsoc website. HERE
Dear Mr. Dasti,
In your letter dated 11/7/2016 referred to as Lakewood ZB – Video and taping issues GL-25368 you refer to the issue that arose at the 10/31/16 zoning board meeting. At that meeting, Abraham Penzer cited concerns regarding the precision of my microphone causing interference with communications with his client. He claimed that this would cause a violation of attorney client privilege

Lakewood Zoning Board to restrict and limit recordings at Meetings

While mayor Miller said that he has no problem with the microphones or cameras at township meetings, the zoning board is attempting to stop the public from hearing what they are doing. A Letter sent to First amendment activist from the Zoning Board attorney was posted on politicsoc website. In the letter the attorney says he will recommend guidelines for public recording such as, only one video apparatus that must be in the back of the room in order to "protect attorney client privacy".
Following up on last zoning board meeting meeting where an attorney claimed that a microphone at the podium violates his attorney client privilege. The Lakewood zoning board will adopt an ordinance  at this Monday's meeting to tighten the rules on the pubic recordings of the proceedings. These new rules will make it more difficult to film at public zoning board meetings. More so its looking like an attempt to curb First amendment activist who provides a wonderful service to the Lakewood community by recording township meetings and uploading the videos to YouTube. Chaos, confusion and a lack of preperdness and planning at polling places in Lakewood

Election day across Lakewood was exciting, there was a  historic presidential vote on the ballot, but on the other hand it was an abysmal collapse of the election infrastructure across Lakewood. Voters waited in lines for over two hours in packed rooms and social halls to cast their vote. Districts were confusing as to who votes where, people living o the same block were told to vote in two different places. Districts with a few thousand registered voters were only staffed with a few voting machines.
True, many factors contributed to the chaos, Parents brought children to the booth and have them see a democratic voting process take place, and the nature of a democratic election brings more people to the polls.
However a lack of planing on behalf of township officials and the last minute write in endorsements by the Lakewood VAAD and IGUD (which was a mistake) contributed much to the mayhem and made the actual voting take longer by writing in long names. These slots for the BOE were empty for a while and the Igud could have got names up on the ballot earlier preventing the write ins.
Come tonight to the township meting and demand a better election preparedness and planning for next year.

TBL-There is a Township Committee meeting tomorrow night at 231 3rd Street at 7:30 PM.
We urge all concerned residents of Lakewood to attend to show support. If you are concerned about the unimpeded growth, congestion, density and traffic, this is your chance! If you can, prepare a 4 minute speech. If not, please come anyway and fill up seats in the room so that we can have a strong showing of concerned residents.
"But I'm not the type of guy to do these things" - It's okay, com anyway and just sit and watch (and clap)
"But all we'll get is insincere promises" - Come anyway. Ask the difficult questions and demand action from the committee members.
It's time to take a stand and to tell our elected officials that this can't continue!

Lakewood kids rejoice with Trump win, no more whole wheat bread

A Trump victory was good news to many Lakewood kids but nothing to do with politics.
Parents, Rebbeim, and moros were having a hard time with kids not eating school lunches as the kids refused to comply with  regulations implemented by first lady Michelle Obama. The menu calls for whole grain whole wheat bread and no white or rye bread. According to a report the New school lunch standards implemented as a result of First Lady Michelle Obama’s anti-obesity campaign have led to more than 1 million children leaving the lunch line. The kids hope with a new president the good old lunches will be served.
