State passes Lakewood busing bill

Assuming all goes as planned pending a signature from Gov. Christie there will be courtesy bussing for next year and perhaps thereafter.  The NJ assembly voted for a pilot program tailored for Lakewood that will give the private schools control over the funding for state mandated bussing of their students. According to APP.com The vote was 41 in favor and 27 opposed, with two abstentions. The pilot plans on negotiating lower rates with bus companies that will leave extra money for courtesy busing. The township promised to fund the courtesy bussing for public school students not eligible for mandated bussing.

Connecting the LKWD busing bill with the gas tax vote

This one from Politickernj- Those newfound pals of Gov. Chris Christie awoke today to find a regurgitated bill on the Assembly board list: S2049, a so-called private school courtesy busing bill.
"A source speculated that the bill’s sponsors – Assemblyman Sean Kean and Assemblyman David Rible, both Monmouth Republicans – could more easily back the late Transportation Trust Fund (TTF) fix on Monday with the expectation of this bill again seeing daylight today." read more HERE

NJ residents furious at gas tax now

Gas tax vote On Thursday June 30th  the New Jersey State Senate will vote on raising the state gas tax by 23 cents  and Gov. Christie would sign the bill if they do. NJ1015 reports many Jersey residents remain strongly opposed to the plan. Patrick Murray, director of the Monmouth University Polling Institute, believes this is happening for a combination of reasons.
He said the proposed gas tax increase – now that it’s finally been laid out and passed by the lower house – has struck an emotional chord with many people who already have a huge mistrust of government. So, they wind up thinking “this is a money grab, you really do want to use it for something else, and it just feeds this mistrust that people have, 23 cents just sounds so big in the grand scheme of things right now.”

Vote on busing bill facing opposition

Lakewood busing vote is this Thursday in Trenton. The bill was pulled late Monday night when there was not enough votes for it to pass. Yet the lies about the orthodox community continue unabated -
The myth- Orthodox private schools are taking away money intended for public school students for their own courtesy busing. The NJEA which is fiercely opposing the bill, ran a headline "Bill takes millions from Lakewood public schools to pay for busing for ineligible private school students" The claim is made according to their report, "S-2049 (Singer)/A-3652 (Rible, Kean) would direct the Lakewood school district, which is already underfunded in the current year by almost $5 million, to overpay a consortium of private schools to bus private school students.  Also, under provisions of the bills, the consortium would be permitted to use the overpayment to bus private school students who are not eligible for busing under State law."
In truth, the money to bus private students living past the threshold of  2 or 2.5 miles is mandated by the state. New Jersey law requires school districts to provide transportation to students who live more than two miles from school for grades K-8, and 2.5 miles for high school students. All across NJ towns pay for courtesy busing due to safety concerns, which includes many public school students who live less than the 2 mile threshold. If the school district is unable to provide transportation to nonpublic students within this limit, the district is required to make an “aid in lieu of transportation” payment to the parents of the nonpublic school student.

Priorities

Its almost the end of district busing never the less the last few days have been hectic for some boys schools. Since girls schools are closed and day camp began the companies have moved up the schedule of boys routes bu a half hour. Instead of 8:30, pick up now is at 8:00 am. Is it more important to have girls get on time to camp than inconvenience the boys  in yeshiva especially now during the end of the year when bed time is later? Its a small complaint but where are our priorities.

The Levaya will take place at Bais Medrash Govoha in the Yoshon B''M on 7th street. kevura will be before shkiah in Lakewood in the sons of Israel bais Olam on East 7th street. TNZBH

Lakewood will receive + $2,406.73 per student under Christie fairness school formula

According to data compiled by NJ.com the state aid to the Lakewood school district would go up by 59%. The new plan calls for a flat per pupil formula of $6,599. Currently out of the $9.1 Billion state aid to schools 31 districts known as "Abbot districts" receive $5 billion while the remaining 546 share $4 billion in state aid. Will property taxes go down? who knows. In addition, the current formula of state aid for special ED in Lakewood does not take Lakewood's unique situation into account with more special ed needs. The state assumes x amount of students will need special ed services based on the number of total public school students. The 30,000 private school students are not in the equation which results in less state aid. Lakewood currently receives $24,690,607 in Special ed services (Here) the big chunk comes from local property taxes.

I am here for you

Submitted by HH,
I am not against anyone, definitely not the roshei hayeshiva. why would I be against my own Yeshiva? I am disappointed in the direction that it has gone. Trading in your soul to ensure that there is toilet paper in the bathrooms is not an excuse. Putting bar codes on Talmidim according to many people is not progress when it comes to learning Torah. The only difference between me and everyone that agrees with me, is that I refuse to speak up anonymously. I don't think anyone can say with a straight face that we are experiencing a Jewish Renaissance.
Yiddishkeit has become influenced by magazines with headlines worthy of the National enquirer. While our leaders blame blogs that discuss real issues, multiple magazines and free newspapers rot our brains with articles and ads that reduce Yiddishkeit to cool catch phrases about cheesecake and how to have an easy Tisha bav. Recipes and articles that pressure wives to be perfect homemakers while trying to raise and teach a house full of children. Torah Judaism has turned into a business.

Rabbi Avrohom Yaakov Finkel Z'L

The levayah will take place at 9:45 a.m. at the Congregation Sons of Israel Memorial Chapel off of East 7th Street in Lakewood, NJ.

A town of "High end Gashmiyus", not the Lakewood we know

Brendas is coming to Jackson, million dollar homes going up, trendy new kosher eateries, high end fashion stores. So much for the town whose people are on welfare Govt programs and dont pay taxes, the Front page of the APP writes about the changing demographics in Lakewood the article by reporter Mr. Shannon Mullen is titled "Lakewood goes Luxe". Hope Chapel Rd now nicknamed Lakewood's Rodeo drive. A quote "When I go into some of these companies I'm amazed; I feel like I'm in Manhattan," says Rabbi Aaron Kotler, president of Lakewood's prestigious Beth Medrash Govoha yeshiva, the article mentions a state report several years ago said the college has spawned hundreds of new businesses and thousands of local jobs. The township tax assessor is quoted about the newly built homes "It looks like something you'd see in the Hamptons". 5,000 Square feet is not big for a house anymore, new ones are coming in at 8,000. On the other hand not mentioned in the article is the thousands of youngeleit and mishpachos that are still living simply with mesiras nefesh, there is a great divide but the majority is still old lakewood as many fondly refer to it.

Fortunately the moms and kids got out of the way, and they were all visibly shaken, but not hurt. I did call the police, but the woman left the scene (after stopping at the liquor store here in the picture).

The senate portion of the bill was passed today June 23rd
Assemblyman Rep. Sean Kean [R] Rep. David Rible [R] have introduced a bill that would Establish a three-year nonpublic  school pupil transportation pilot program in Lakewood School District to provide funding to consortium of nonpublic schools that will assume responsibility for district's mandated nonpublic school busing. Under the bill, (New Jersey Assembly Bill 3652) the Commissioner of Education will designate  one eligible district to  participate in the pilot program. The bill defines an eligible district as a school district which in the most recent school year prior to the effective date of the bill supplied transportation to more than 5,000 pupils residing in the school

Gov Christie calls for equal funding per student in NJ

Trenton- Republican Gov. Chris Christie on Tuesday proposed redistributing billions of dollars in educational aid from the poorest districts to hundreds of other schools, calling the current funding formula “immoral” and a factor in the state’s highest-in-the nation property taxes.

Christie, a high-profile adviser to presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump, focused on a classic New Jersey boogeyman— high property taxes, which the nonpartisan Tax Foundation rates as the country’s highest — and a long-simmering frustration that the state’s school funding unfairly helps some residents while burdening others, with little to show for it.

Article on Lakewood growth

New Jersey Public radio article on Lakewood growth etc.. The issue as we know is a funding problem yet people like to blame the state mandated courtesy busing for private schools. Listen below

NJ spotlight/ WNYC (by Meir Rinde) -The Ocean County town of Lakewood is New Jersey’s fastest-growing municipality, thanks to a soaring number of Orthodox Jews who have moved there from New York. Located about 10 miles from the shore, it’s more than doubled in size over the past two decades and is on pace to become the state’s third largest city by 2030.

But the phenomenal growth that turned a struggling former lakeside resort into a boomtown has also strained its outdated infrastructure and led to severe financial deficits in the schools. Together, those problems have created a school busing crisis that has exacerbated social tensions and, according to public school parents, endangered their children’s safety.

The town owes its rejuvenation in large part to Rabbi Aharon Kotler, who

Township pulls shtick with Digital billboards

The Lakewood township put up a last minute resolution prior to Thursday's committee meeting. The resolution called for the rejection of the bids for 5 digital billboards to be posted throughout Lakewood. No reason was given, however it seems someone threatened a lawsuit since the bidding was done in private as opposed to being held in the auditorium as posted. Or perhaps the bid did not go to the intended receiver.

Its a long Friday whats the rush

Tomorrow Erev Shabbos because of a conflict with the short day schedule at the public schools, the private schools will have early dismissals to accommodate the busing. Girls schools will be dismissed at 10:45 am meaning the girls will be in school a bit over an hour. Boy schools are also ending an hour early. More so parents may not be home in time and are forced to make arrangements. Its a very long day why cant schools end a bit later and either have carpools for pick up or get busing? Is this too much to ask for a week before school is over? Its bad enough to be held hostage to the district like this but why are schools burdening all parents when all they have to do is go for another hour or two.

A request to close a public road to through traffic

Traffic is bad enough as it is in Lakewood, any open road and thoroughfare helps ease congestion and keep traffic flow. Yet Township official dont seem to take the needs of the public into consideration .One of the request obtained through OPRA by NJ News and Views was to have the American avenue closed to the public.
"A second attachment was a May 26 memo from Tony Arecchi, Director - Maintenance Services. The memo was addressed to Henshaw, Secare, Township Engineer Jeff Staiger, and Patrick Donnelly, who was appointed director of the township's Department of Public Works in April.
"We are requesting American Avenue be closed to through traffic at the eastern point leading to New Hampshire Avenue, creating a dead end by our fuel station," Arecchi told township officials. "Presently American Avenue has

Isru Chag Shavuos, Lakewood

Tuesday, Isru Chag, most Lakewood schools will be starting at regular time with regular transportation.
The Yom tov of Shavuos in Lakewood was celebrated by thousands in Lakewood over 3 days. The weather was hotter than expected over the first 2 days, the 2nd day YT saw nice weather making it easy on those who walked eating out by friends and family. In many developments shabbos goy services were available for those ovens that shut off, AC or lights turned on etc. In a reverse of the usual, Parents, in laws, siblings flocked to Lakewood to spend tom tov with their children. The kol Torah was heard shavuos night in all yeshivos and botei midrashim of Lakewood. Many shuls hosted special learning programs for kids who stayed up late shavuos night. A dilemma this year among 5th grade rebbeim, if to encourage the boys to stay up or not various opinions were said, some held not to push kids at all to stay up, but rather had special learning programs over the rest of shavuos.

Rabbi Moshe Rabinowitz ZT''L remembered at the Oorah radiothon

Hear the strory of Reb Moshe Rabinowitz ztz"l, a man who held numerous positions in the community, among them Menahel of MeYeshiva Keren Hatorah, and Rav of Beis Medrash Tiferes Shimon in lakewood, NJ. Yet, he found the time to reach out and study Torah with unaffiliated Jews with Oorah's TorahMates program. He did not view his Torah Mate as a secondary responsibility. In fact, a short while before his passing while in excruciating pain, the one thing on his mind was who will take over and learn with his TorahMate after his passing. Hear about this great man from the words of his TorahMate, Dr. Martin Fried, and from his son, R' Yisroel Rabinowitz Shlit"a.
