700K for a Duplex!

No, not for both houses but for only one house in a duplex, reading The Lakewood real estate section has now become wishful thinking to many couples. Its like reading home prices in the affluent suburbs of NYC. For those who hoped to buy a home in Lakewood after renting for ten years, its now a fading dream. The asking prices keep rising with no end in sight. Many are hoping for the bubble to burst for the market to flood, but that has yet to come. Blame goes around from developers to builders to brokers to the home buyers themselves. Builders are not making more money per house as prices went up and selling the land is where the profits are made. Standards have gone up and the average duplex is now closer to 3000 Sq feet. Brokers are luring New Yorkers with more money to put down since for them Brooklyn is not an option, a home in Lakewood  for 700K is cheaper than paying over 1 Million. Young couples are looking elsewhere after they are being priced out. Neighboring town homes are not that cheaper with prices being driven up, at least you get a nice sized property. Time will tell but for now there is no letting up and kolell members living in Lakewood for a number of years are now facing a reality they did not think would come so fast.

Star Ledger Editorial, politics as usual

Editorial in The star ledger:The separation between church and state is occasionally blurred, especially with funding for parochial schools, as New Jersey often provides aid in the form of textbooks and busing for religious institutions. But this bedrock provision is clear: The state's constitution forbids subsidizing the building of facilities where religious instruction takes place. So the ACLU sued to block the Christie Administration from awarding $11 million to a rabbinical school and a ministry in 2013. Route 9 expansion, not so fast

A meeting was held last week in Lakewood attended by officials from the State, NJTPA, Local township, BMG administration, and the Voice of Lakewood. The local residents will first have an opportunity to give their advice and recommendations at a meeting planned for July, once the plan has already been recommended.  Several recommendations were made by officials who do not live or reside in Lakewood, among them providing Left turn lanes along Rt 9, diverting traffic to Cedar bridge and have RT 9 be a one way street for the stretch of roadway parallel to Cedarbridge Avenue. Widening Rt 9 which would take care of all problems is unfeasible at this point due to the

APP Editorial: Healthy enlightenment about the Orthodox

Following the book presentation at the Lakewood  Library APP calls for more  events in neighboring towns.
APP- More than 100 people crowded into the Lakewood branch of the Ocean County Library earlier this week to learn more about the Jewish Orthodox religion from professor and author Ali Botein-Furrevig, who has written a book on the Lakewood Orthodox community and its roots.

It was a program that should be repeated at the county’s main library in Toms River and its branch in Jackson, as well as in the school districts of those two towns. It could go a long way toward bringing about a greater understanding of, and appreciation for, the Orthodox community’s origins, its culture and its rituals. Botein-Furrevig, an associate professor of English and Jewish studies at Ocean County College, is an expert on the topic. Her thoroughly researched book, “Heart of the Stranger: A Portrait of Lakewood’s Orthodox Community,” was vetted for accuracy by Rabbi Aaron Kotler, president and dean of the Beth Medrash Govoha yeshiva, and by other members of Lakewood’s Vaad, a council of rabbis and Orthodox leaders.

BMG ‘Disappointed’ Court Cancelled $10M State Grant

Disappointed, is what a spokesperson for BMG  said following courts ruling on grant. Hamodia reports:
(BMG)LAKEWOOD - America’s premier yeshivah reacted with disappointment to a state court’s ruling Thursday that a $10.6 million grant by New Jersey was unconstitutional.

Rabbi Moshe Gleiberman, vice president of Lakewood’s Beis Medrash Govoha, said in a statement that the appellate court’s decision discriminated against religious schools. He said that most of the 6,800 students at the yeshivah go into non-clergy professions.

State officials proposing traffic changes for Route 9 south

Following the traffic studies congestion along route 9 state officials are proposing major traffic changes in the Rt 9 rt 88 Central ave and Cedarbridge area. They want to make Hurley a one way eastbound only between Route 9 and Cedarbridge,  forcing all the Cedarbridge traffic to turn left on to the 88 to access Route 9 North, because their models show that this would improve the Central ave access to the 9 and help the traffic flow there. The plan is to add two left turning lanes to central, make two lanes on 9 NB between central and 88 and longer turning lanes SB to make the left onto Hurley.

LAKEWOOD - The featured speaker was a professor and author who’d come to talk about the facts and fallacies surrounding the Orthodox Jewish community. A Common misconception that all members of the Orthodox community in Lakewood are Chasidim only about 20 percent belong to that sect of Orthodox Judaism, she said, while the vast majority are Yeshivish Orthodox Jews.

"A capacity crowd of more than 100 people showed up at the Lakewood branch of the Ocean County Library, most of them seniors from adult communities in Lakewood and surrounding towns" APP reports They weren’t there to debate — about property taxes or busing or the yeshiva being built up the road. Not on this night. They were there to listen, and ask questions.

Saving taxpayers a whopping $4,111,602.

NJ News & Views
Taxpayers in New Jersey's fastest-growing municipality have an unlikely hero.

Thanks to objections raised by the Shore Builders Association of Central New Jersey, a Lakewood-based organization representing the interests of real estate developers, taxpayers can breathe a sigh of relief. A proposed ordinance is dead that would have exempted the township's most influential government lobbyist from paying a fair share contribution towards Cedarbridge Town Center off-tract road improvements, and would have instead shifted that obligation to taxpayers.

Turn on the light

Submitted.
Why is the township dragging its feet and not activating the traffic signal at the intersection of Pine street and Avenue of the States. There have been numerous accidents at that corner, it is also the entrance to Pine River village were many seniors have it very hard driving in and out. Ironically the township recently installed and  activated 3 traffic signals near the Woods development  on Cedarbridge avenue,  by Quick check and plan another one at the Vine street intersection. Does money have more preference than lives C'V? how many accidents c'v will it take to turn on the light.?

School taxes going up, another referendum in November

APP reports School taxes are going up. The BOE will vote on it tonight. The proposed local tax levy for 2016-17 is $95.37 million, up more than $4.4 million. For the owner of a home assessed at $250,000, that will mean an extra $294 in school taxes. In addition the District is asking for an additional $2 million dollars in a referendum this coming November asking  voters to approve an additional tax levy of $2 million to lower the deficit.  If approved, the additional $2 million tax levy for deficit reduction would add just less than $80 to that homeowner's total school tax bill.
