Group plans Kaporos protest in Lakewood

NJ animal rights activists plan to protest against Kaporos in Lakewood, NJ. Oct 8th and 9th 1 pm to 5pm. Corner of Rt 9 and County Line Rd in Lakewood.  "PROTEST WILL BE HELD FOR TWO DAYS, OCT 8TH 1 to 5PM and OCT 9TH, 1 TO 5PM. WE WILL MEET ON THE CORNER OF COUNTY LINE RD AND RT 9. FOR THOSE USING A GPS THE ADDRESS IS 1700 MADISON AVE. LAKEWOOD,NJ. (PAYLESS SHOE STORE)"

  4. Their plan is bring attention to the practice of waving chickens on the head. They will catch the attention of every passing vehicle on Rt 9, and this will be in the media. It will be huge kidush hashem when the country hears about the chickens on the head.

  5. According to the Encyclopedia Judaica (Volume 10, pages 756-757), several Jewish sages strongly opposed kapparot. Rabbi Solomon ben Abraham Aderet, the Rashba, one of the foremost Jewish scholars during the 13th century, considered it a heathen superstition. This opinion was shared by the Ramban, and Rabbi Joseph Caro, The Beis Yosef, who called it "a foolish custom" that Jews should avoid. They felt that it was a pagan custom that mistakenly made its way into Jewish practice, perhaps because when Jews lived among pagans this rite seemed like a korban (sacrifice) to some extent.
