Agudah letter thanking for helping with Lakewood busing.

Leter was written 4 weeks ago before the busing fiasco was apparent. lets hope in the end it will all work itself out.

Dear Friends,
Yeyasher kochachem, congratulations, thank you!

As you probably know, the yeshiva community in Lakewood was
facing a major crisis just a few months ago. Government officials declared that there was no money in the budget to continue school bus transportation for many yeshiva children as they had been receiving for many years.

Had this decision gone into effect, it would have wreaked havoc throughout the entire community - not only with the schedules of thousands of children and their parents, not only with the sidrei halimud in our yeshivos and Bais Yaakovs, but with commuters and pedestrians throughout the city whose already overcrowded streets would have become even more congested with all the extra traffic generated by the loss of school busing.

Stated simply, this was a disaster waiting to explode.

LIC discuss security concerns regarding events at stadium

The Lakewood township never brought it up publicly, since the LIC, (Lakewood Industrial commission) is in charge of the stadium. In a recent meeting the commission discussed the rock festivals which are taking place this weekend. It apears the township has to change or update the insurance policy to accomodate these events how much did premiums go up?
Following is an excerpt from minutes of the meeting LIC HERE
"Discussion took place regarding upcoming entertainment events that are scheduled to take place at  the Baseball Stadium in late September and early October. Special Events permit applications are now coming before the LIC for authorization. Security concerns regarding the events  Police Department also reviews and recommends security measures  Township adopted an ordinance to address events to be held at the venue, Insurance  Atty. Kean will look at the insurance thresholds and requirements to provide adequate  coverage."

Busing Frustration why does courtesy come before mandated

A month into the school year parents of private schools are upset and frustrated, they still do not have busing. Parents of children who have mandated busing want to know why preference was given to courtesy busing routes while they are still car pooling waiting for bids to be picked up. In addition some schools have resorted to private busing and parents are paying over $500 per child while those who got busing are only paying $125. Another sore point the Lakewood township paid all courtesy busing costs of non mandated public school students while the private school students are paying out of pocket. The LSTA hopes to bring more buses to fill the shortage but it may not happen until after sukkos or perhaps closer to Chanuka.

Profiting off yenems Tzara?

I saw an ad for a mens group to provide support and therapy session for men who are divorced. So this is how it goes, families are first broken apart by the "therapists" children are alienated and removed from parents, authorities are contacted on trumped up false allegations as fathers are thrown out. Children are treated with no parental involvement (in some cases the fathers are never contacted that their children are in therapy) and are taught to with foreign hashkafos how not to respect their parents. So, now after the damage is done they offer a mens group to profit more on the backs of the fathers who were thrown out of their homes and removed from their children in the first place. How many living yesomim have we created with our very own hands? and than we ask hashem for rachmanus?
As the famous maamar chazal goes...

Cops manning major intersections, traffic still a mess in LKWD

The township had Police officers at major intersections around Lakewood to help with the traffic flow in the morning rush. LPD officers were stationed at the busy intersections of  rt 9 Pine, James, Oak ,MLK, Cross, prospect and other areas. it hasn't helped much and in some cases traffic is even worse. Traffic lights are going up at various intersections in the aforementioned roads were officials are optimistic it will help ease the congestion.

Williams street will be closed over Rosh Hashana

LPD-Williams Street closed again? Yes, for your maximum convenience.
The Lakewood Police Department has announced that Williams Street will be closed between Omni Court and Prospect Street from Saturday, October 1st through Tuesday October 4th. Paving crews require four consecutive work days in order to complete significant roadwork on that stretch of roadway. The pavement will be milled, paved and winterized. This will eliminate potholes and other difficulties on the road for the long term, with no additional road work or closures expected within the foreseeable future.

There's no debating, Night seder comes first

The highly anticipated presidential debate took place last night. The many yeshiva bochurim who are following the presidential race do not have access to radio or the web and rely on the frum news info lines for the latest updates and current events. FNW phone line based in Lakewood (Frum News Wire) is were many turn to for all the latest political news and audio soundbites. Initially FNW was going to air the debate live, but than they notified the audience that there was a change in schedule and it did not air live. The result, hours and hours of Torah was learned during seder in preparation for the yom hadin.
There no question who was the real winner last night It was neither Donald Trump Nor Hillary Clinton.

Township officials mum about upcoming rock concerts in Lakewood

Over 80,000 are expected to attend two back to back weekends of rock festivals at the blueclaws stadium in Lakewood. The first one will take place this coming Friday through Sunday evening going into Rosh Hashana. Heavy traffic expected on the main roads coming into Lakewood. Its erev Yom tov was anyone informed to do their shopping in advance? Where will all cars park?  On the official website it says "There will be NO street parking around First Energy Park. We are asking all our guests to respect the wonderful community of Lakewood, NJ. There will be a zero tolerance for street parking and all vehicles parked on the streets around First Energy Park will be towed." For the following week concert there will be parking in areas designated by the Lakewood Police Department. On social media people were complaining about the high price for on site parking. So, where do you think they will park??  In addition who is providing security at the event. A venue of such magnitude should have been addressed publicly with Lakewood residents but as usual everything is done in secrecy to benefit a few while the quality of life of Lakewood residents just doesn't factor at all.

Route 9 proposal will choke the East -West access in Lakewood

This Wednesday Sep,28, the NJTPA is hosting meetings and presentations for Lakewood residents on the proposed improvements for Route 9, to alleviate congestion on the Rt 9/River Ave corridor. While some recomendations make sense such as adding left turn lanes, the proposal (HERE) calls to make Hurley avenue a one way street only going East to Cedarbridge. Meaning you can not make a left or right onto Hurley from S. Clifton or Cedarbridge going to central ave or Rt 9. The only way to get to Central avenue from Cedarbridge or rt 9 is to reroute all the traffic to rt 88 and back around on Rt 9. This will be a disaster. It means the only way to get to the west part of Lakewood is either the congested Pine street to James or to go all the way around to rt 88 back to central avenue. Traffic on S Clifton going north is a parking lot already. There are serious safety issues by limiting Hurley to a one way, emergency vehicles will take longer to get to the other side of rt 9. The public should attend this meeting and give practical ideas, these officials do not live in Lakewood and have no understanding of the impact from the proposed changes.

Lakewood based org calls for day of unity to counter polarizing political climate

An Orthodox Jewish outreach group that last year called for a “Day of Jewish Unity” to oppose the Iran nuclear deal is repeating the event this year, this time with the goal of countering the “polarizing political climate.”
Acheinu, based in Lakewood, New Jersey, and Israel, is encouraging yeshivas, synagogues and individuals to study and pray for peace and unity on Sept. 27, one day after the first presidential debate between Democrat Hillary Clinton and Republican Donald Trump.

How did you say (or ask for) Selichos?

I went to shul heard a fiery speech from the Rav, the chazzan began the traditional kadish to the tune of yomim noraim, fathers with sleepy eyed children, old and young were in the audience all asking for forgiveness as we get ready for the Yom Hadin. When it was over we went home. There were no photographers, no guitars, no organ, no cello, no musical instruments, no dancing, no entertainment, no carlebach nusach no kumzitz. It was a simple selichos recital seen in many shuls across the world the way it was done last year, and the year before, with the authentic nusach. But you wont see a video of it on the websites because its just perhaps too old fashioned or not newsworthy. Not here to take away or make light of what others do but we have become a man bites dog society.

Zmanim for Lakewood area may be different for Jackson, other areas

At this time of year mosdos send out magnets with zmanim for hadlokas neiros and Shkia, sof zman Krias shema etc. As the community grows and residents moved to neighboring towns the zmanim may not be accurate depending on your location.
Jackson is more west than Lakewood, shkias hachama or the sunset in Jackson is 35 seconds later than the sunset in Lakewood. According to My Zmanim shkia in Lakewood this week as at 6:51:23 and in Jackson its 6:52:00. Toms River is on par with Lakewood even though it is a drop more East.
However its hard to tell how far inside Jackson the line is drawn. Those living closer to the Lakewood border are more East and therefore are in the same area.  If you live deeper inside Jackson thats where it can make a difference. Perhaps closer to six flags is where the late shkia is. Overall its good to be machmir anyways a minute earlier on erev shabbos or 2 minutes later on Motzei shabbos like this you avoid all issues.
This is just for debate for all Halachic issues contact you local Posek.

Parents ask for chizuk in hopes to get their son into school

Its not easy. Not everyone had the right connections and pull to get their child into a school that will best suit their child's needs. In one recent case a parent reached out yesterday to friends in an online forum asking for help and chizuk in hopes of finding the right school for their son.
"We are trying to find a for my son who was in Yesodos (formerly oros yisroel) and most of his teachers and therapists feel he is ready for a mainstream school. My son is 7.5 and second grade. All the schools you recommended would not even speak with us, besides for telling us that their resources are only for their existing students who need them, they are not willing to take in new kids for this. We have zero influence, pull, or connections in those schools.
I'm feeling very discouraged and don't know where to go from here.

Only in Lakewood! and proud of it

A picture of a item sold in a Lakewood store was posted on a website with the title "Only in Lakewood" as content to mock Lakewood residents who strive for a higher level in ruchniyus. The item was covered with white stickers obviously to cover over a immodest picture on the packaging. The store owners feels this is the right thing to do for themselves and their costumers. If Someone wants to better his shmiras einayim is he not entitled to it? does it have to be mocked and used to continually stereotype Lakewood as fanatics and extremists. If anything Lakewood should be proud to have people that are continuously striving to be better especially during this time of year.

Forget busing, 3 kids still not accepted to school

We hoped and thought this year would be different. As the busing issue dominates the conversation the  wishful thinking was the issue if not getting into School in Lakewood was a thing of the past. Unfortunately a week before Rosh hashna there are  3 kids still not in school.  There as at least one primary boy and one primary aged girl out of school and at least one high school girl. No matter what spin and excuse or blame goes around the bottom line is 3 children are sitting home. This is not how we want to approach the Yom Hadin asking for selicha while this goes on. Please If anyone has influence to settle this fast.  TY.

DONATE HERE   (B''H no one was in the building at the time. APP)
In the early hours of Tuesday morning, a fire ripped through the chill - the Minyan Girls' Headquarters in Jackson destroying everything in its path. For years, this building served as a home for dozens of local girls providing them with a refuge of warmth, care and compassion. This home always had an open door when most other doors in their lives were locked. This home was a lifeline of assistance and encouragement so desperately needed. But now, all that lies is a smoldering pile of rubble and ash. One girl tearfully told us, “The chill house was a home to me, where I can feel safe and loved. The house has so many good memories filled with care and kindness. I'll really miss it.”

Lakewood Planing board meeting tonight

LAKEWOOD PLANNING BOARD AGENDA Tuesday, September 20, 2016 6:00 P.M.  at Municipal auditorium 3rd street.

1. Resolution of Appointment – Oak Street Core Residential Development Subcommittee

Busing woes continue some schools get private transportation.

Patience has worn out already for the  parents whose kids still do not have busing. People are at their wits end with the transportation schedules and traffic. The bigger schools are mostly taken care of, no matter the justifications or reasons parents of smaller schools have had it. One school's bids did not get picked up and they arranged private transportation charging non mandated parents $500 with the school swallowing the rest of the costs.
Yet, this did not stop a local website from posting a inflammatory headline "Are Catholic Kids Left Out in the Cold by Lakewood Busing Pilot Program?". There are actually a few thousand orthodox Jewish kids still with no busing, are they that clueless? did they not sit in traffic? According to the above referenced article some of their routes were simply not picked up yet, as per the LSTA Statement.  Additionally some catholic schools did not join the consortium and are under the BOE control. Nevertheless, parents are told Hopefully by next week it will be taken care of.
Yes they heard those words before.

APP keeps peddeling nonsense about Lakewood private schools

APP keeps peddling the same baseless nonsense about Lakewood private schools with claims of not being accredited and therefore schools should not be subject as a recipient of state funding. The paper keeps posting these silly op eds with not a single shred of evidence and the lazy reports fail to mention how many of the 125 private schools are actually accredited. Additionally there is no law anywhere backing up this made premise. In the latest article the paper quotes the private schools religious centers masquerading as schools "Are taxpayer dollars being spent on “religious centers” masquerading as “schools?” Is calling a building a “school” simply a dodge to defeat the concept of separation of church and state?" the author asks?
Its interesting to note the Lakewood accredited public school has now been under control of the state monitor. The cost per student in Lakewood is close to $25,000 compared to Jackson which is $8000 per student. The tax base in Lakewood comes from the Orthodox community as one commenter wrote "I live in Jackson, the cost per student is a bit over $8,000. The cost per student in Lakewood's failing public school system now exceeds $25,000. This FAILING School System is accredited by the State of NJ.

Update: School bus driver fired after road rage incident in Lakewood "The driver was let go last night," a woman answering the phone at Jay's Bus Service said Thursday morning. The woman, who would not give her name, said there were no students on the bus at the time of the incident. She said the bus was driving for an Ocean County school district, but she would not specify which district.
FedEx issued a brief statement by email through its media department Thursday morning: "We take safety very seriously and are looking into the matter."

Feeling the heat township backs off proposal to abolish rent control board

In a rare interview, Lakewood Mayor Menashe Miller tells the Lakewood scoop website, ahead of time, that the township will vote down an Ordinance that just last week they voted to pass. He said the reason to abolish the rent control board was since the voluntary board did not meet on a regular basis, they were going to replace it with a more efficient agency. Well, having an insider on the township as a one man show paid by the town does not frankly make it more efficient. The make up of the board according to township code is a system of fairness were both landlords and tenants are equally represented. A one man board would have never done that. Board members have now committed to serve said the mayor which is why they will now vote down the ordinance.
The Ordinance to abolish the rent control board was snuck into the township agenda with no prior public dialogue or  correspondence with the Lakewood tenants. Suspicion quickly arose as to the true motives behind abolishing the rent control board. Some members of the rent control board were not aware or informed of the ordinance to abolish the board they serve on. Local Residents and blogs had suspicions about this Ordinance.

LPD: Investigating Video involving school bus and fed Ex truck

Update: School bus Driver fired.
A video of a near collision between a  bus driver and a fed ex truck in Lakewood was posted on Facebook. The bus appears to pass the truck while the truck swerves left forcing the bus onto oncoming traffic. It happened yesterday on Airport Road near the GSP entrance. LPD on its facebook page said they are aware of the video and are investigating.  "We would like to thank everyone who has brought to our attention the incident involving the school bus. We assure you that it has been forwarded to the appropriate unit. The video has been forwarded to our traffic safety unit for further investigation and pending charges"

Lakewood Township ordinance to abolish rent control board is up for second reading

After sneaking it in last township committee meeting (here), once again the township is looking to get rid of the rent control board.
An Ordinance Of The Township Of Lakewood, County Of Ocean, State Of New Jersey, Amending And Supplementing Chapter II Of The Revised General Ordinances Of The Township Of Lakewood, Entitled “Administration”, By Repealing Section 2-49 (Rent Control Board), Inclusive, In Its Entirety.
Residents wondered why is the township looking to get rid of the rent control board? Read more at Yudelstake.

Another Ordinance up for second reading repealing section 18-506 of the Oak street corridor in its entirety and replacing it.

Parents are asked to be patient as busing still not under control

Patience patience, schools and the LSTA are asking frustrated parents to hold out a bit longer as busing issues are worked on. More bids were picked up by bus companies, while some schools are still without busing. Schools that have busing are also running into problems with buses showing up late or not showing up at all. One school had busing last week but than lost busing service this week. Bus companies from nearby towns are being wooed to bid and pick up routes that are  still available. Not resolved yet why the township paid $2 million for the courtesy busing for public school children yet private school non mandated courtesy busing are charged a $150 per child fee. Some schools sent home notes charging parents, but the charge is coming from the LSTA and not the school. The BOE has a fleet of 30 buses paid by tax payers that are empty at certain times but so far the private mandated busing can not use them.

A volunteer fire fighter addresses some concerns

Submitted via comment. Thank you for your service.
As a frum firefighter let me address some of your concerns. Let me start by saying that many of us are at odds with the board members but that has nothing to do with or concerns.

1) Please look at how much you actually pay more in taxes for the fire tax. You pay a lot more for the town to waste. It went from 0.058 to 0.070. Now calculate that against what the value of your home is (this is your per year bill). Also the max 2% is a farce. The township (not related to the FD) has done a lot more than 2%, they use a loophole. Your anger should be facing them.
2) There are many times we need to be at the firehouse such as storm standbys. When it's freezing cold out side and there is 3 feet of snow on the ground we are called to the firehouse in case there is a fire. We wait there so if

Over 80,000 expected at rock festivals in Lakewood

If traffic is not bad enough, Lakewood township this month will be host to two rock festivals that will take place at first energy park in Blue claws stadium. The foodandtruck festival is two weeks away erev Rosh Hashana. From Sept 30th to October 2nd a 3 day festival expected to draw 50,000 people over the 3 days. A week later on Columbus day weekend Lakewood will again host another rock festival adventureinthepark October 8-9 headlined by major rock bands and rap artists. The former Police chief refused to grant a liquor license for the event citing violence breakout in a similar venue last year. The township vowed to have it overturned by the LIC. Lakewood police will patrol the perimeter of the events and Lakewood EMS will provide first aid services. Over the last few year that area has been developed with residential housing. Organizers say there will be no off street parking and it will be strictly enforced.
How much will this cost taxpayers?
