Property Tax bills arrive and taxes goes up again

Lakewood residents recently received the 2106-2017 preliminary  property tax bill and to no ones surprise taxes have gone up. The tax rate went up to 2.930 from 2.835 last year. The Municipal portion remained the same at .0861 per $100 assessed value but the school, county, and Fire district taxes all went up. The school district taxes were raised by the allowable increase of 2%. It went from 1.403 last year to 1.449 this year. Fire district went up from .058 to .070. County increases went from 0.434 to 0.466. All in all homeowners will be paying on average an additional $100 per 100,000 of assessed value. A home assessed at 400,000 will pay close to $400.

  1. And still no courtesy busing but enough money to pay a bloated health insurance policy and other perks and benifits and other waste on the backs of Lakewood taxpayers.

  3. So complain to the State about the school formula and complain to the county about their taxes.

    1. We are always told to vote for vaad or Igud candidates that will help bring down taxes. Those scare tactics are always used to bring out the votes. High taxes and busing. Well we have no busing and higher taxes with less services.

    2. Same old nonsense. The Igud asks you to vote for candidates who will make it a little easier to get some services for YOUR children. The state monitor us in total control of the budget. The board members can't lower taxes as long as the State monitor is here. Abdvhe will he here till the formula is changed

  4. 1.403 + 2% = 1.431 NOT 1.449
That equals to $18 per 100,000 or $72 for 400,000
So typical lying politicians like Clinton, tell us it's "only" 2% and then tack on MORE than that and think that us dopes won't notice....

  5. Why is the fire district taxes so high? What's going on there?

  6. A good candidate was running for fire commissioner but than the vaad decided put in another candidate. Neither got in since the forum vote was split for no reason.

  8. With all the new housing being built taxes should be going down. That was the lie our committee members that represent the builders always wanted you to believe. The fact is that the more we build the more services we need , that taxes on multi family units being billed as single family homes, do not cover. Special services such as SCHI wipe out any tax revenue from the start. Now add services, busing, garbage, fire, police, snow removal. We lose money with every new development built on raw land that attracts people to move here. The old excuse that Jews need a place to move is no longer valid. Families are happily living in Jackson, Howell, and Toms River. With every development comes new schools, shuls and Mikvas all receiving services and paying no taxes.
This town cannot build at a feverish pace any longer. It was a Ponzi scheme waiting to crumble. And it is already crumbling. Every day we shake our head at a new development in an area that has no infrastructure or recreational space. We waste hours of our precious short lives sitting in traffic. People cross multi Lane highways to get to where they need to go. Public busing was as expected, a waste of money.

Meir and Menashe. I hope someone passes on this message to you both. If you think you are still fooling everyone in this town hiding behind Torah and chesed, you are very mistaken. We all know who you work for. We all know that your main concern is for a select few people that gained monetarily while our town got ruined. The party is almost over. I know people always said I was angry. I really never was angry. I was concerned and wanted to see lakewood become what I always knew it had the potential to be. You both ruined that. Now I am angry.

    1. the township makes money for each house built. that's why they have a huge surplus. that's why municipal taxes never go up.
the tax issue is the school district.

    2. Weak argument, taxes are going up, doesn't make a difference which aspect is going up and which is stable, overall the construction is a net loss to taxpayers.

Housing brings in a need for services. There is no actual surplus. Millions were borrowed over the years to offset raising taxes even higher. If adding housing created lower taxes, every town would be building like we are. It doesn't. It's proven. It's a fact. Even in Lakewood where our children don't use public schools, taxes go up exponentially every year. No other town has tax hikes every year like we do, and they fund first class public school systems. Stop trying to fool the public. When we built housing at a normal pace from 1990 to 2000, taxes rose a minimal amount each year. Since then taxes have more than doubled on a typical home, in many cases quadrupled, while home values do not reflect the raise. Our town constantly reassesses homes to increase their value in order to pay for all the new construction. Speak to anyone on a planning board in any town other than Monsey NY. They will all tell you they don't approve new construction unless they have no choice. And when they do approve any construction it is with many stipulations. They are definitely not allowed to build housing two feet from the street with porches facing cars so drivers can see the families and what they are eating for dinner. We need to bring in business and industry to offset housing construction. Business and industry is not more retail businesses from NY which simply takes money out of our community. We needed to bring in businesses to create money here and keep it here and pay taxes to our town, and then we could make more housing. As usual we did everything backwards because a few Realtors and developers needed their money now and menashe and meir were all too willing to get it for them.

    1. Municipal should have gone down. How much did the Garzo lawsuit cost us. How much extra for the snow plowing debacle. How much for safety because of the business fiasco.

BOE is a waste of time. The only real way to effect the school issues are through state government. Until they change the formula for our town we will be suffering. Then again as long as builders keep building new housing on raw land instead of renovating dilapidated slum housing faster we will continue to fund public schools that are filled with multiple families that live in a home that pays one small tax bill.

Municipal taxes are stable because e our services are inadequate at best. When was the last time your street was cleaned? The downtown was left to rot. Most Streets were never paved. The town looks like my dorm room in the Irvington in 1988

  10. In the corporate world if there is an action that causes the company a large loss due to negligence (Grazo lawsuit) someone would lose their job.

What if the mayor himself caused Mr. Garzo to file the lawsuit. Oops. Did I say too much? Sorry Menashe.

What if the CEO actually benefitted by creating the loss for the corporation? What would happen to that CEO if it was found out that he conspired to create the loss and got a cut from the person suing? Oy. There I go again yapping away. Sorry. I'll be quiet now.

  11. Herschel Hershkowitz is right. As much as I thought that he was extremist in the past now when I read what he writes it is refreshing. I guess I believed what I was being sold by the mainstream vaadim etc. I am now as furious as can be. I as a Ben Torah and citizen of the USA am being robbed by every special interest politician and builder in Lakewood. Rabbis au we are being fleeced! It's not fair!! Stop the building NOW!!!

    1. Reb Yid,
      Why not leave Lkwd?
Focus your kochos on growing elsewhere.
Harold may be correct. however, there is what is known as an establishment and they are all in it together.
Look at Donald. he is being attacked by the Republicans as much as the Dems. Know why? Because he is a threat to them as much as to the dems.
Reb Yid. Harold is a good yid. He is a lone soldier in the night. Are you ready to sign your name and fight with him?
If not, then leave before you get all farbissen emotionally and financially.
Harold, I recommend that you keep a diary and files. This can be a great movie in 25 years. You will have as many extras as you can want lol.

  12. Which town in America let's you build a development that looks like a concentration camp? I'll bet you most of the cars that drive by New Hampshire and Cedar Bridge think it must be a "chicken factory". For this you would move there where your kids will play 2 feet away from a 4 lane highway? Are you nuts? And just wait till after the Rock Carnival and Adventure in the park, HO HO! If you still have a house.......Let the price go down to zero, I don't care!!
