LCSW responds to neighboring towns allegations

Jackson, Toms River, are among neighboring towns to Lakewood who have asked LCSW to cease patrolling their streets.
Recently, the Lakewood Civilian Safety Watch has been the subject of unsubstantiated, ignorant, untrue and misleading allegations that were disseminated over the internet.
Just to clarify who we are and what we do:
The LCSW is a volunteer community watch organization that has been operating in Lakewood for the past ten years. We work hand-in-hand with the Lakewood Police Department, and share a very close relationship with the police force. We are in constant communication with law enforcement, and never embark on operations without coordinating a plan with the proper authorities. We greatly respect the LPD, and they have consistently expressed to us how much they appreciate our assistance in combatting crime and keeping our town safe for all communities and residents.

LCSW told to cease patrolling in Toms River, Jackson

APP reports "Members of the Lakewood Civilian Safety Watch have ceased patrolling in Toms River after Police Chief Mitchell Little asked the group to stop all activities here. "When we learned of the LCSW in our town, they were immediately told to cease and desist any activity," Little said. "They complied." In recent days, some residents of Toms River's North Dover section have complained that members of the safety watch had been spotted driving through streets in Toms River. The safety watch group is a civilian agency whose members assist Lakewood's police department. read more at

Despite the Hype, Orthodox Toms River Residents say Town Has Welcomed Them

Article published in Hamodia newspaper edition.

Media headlines have largely portrayed Toms River as a charged battleground between long-time residents and the growing influx of buyers from the Orthodox community. Yet, those who have actually moved to the town or dealt directly with buyers say that their experiences have been overwhelmingly positive, discounting ugly reporting to story hungry reporters and “a few bad apples,” in what they see as a largely welcoming town.

When over two feet of snow covered much of the northeast this past January, Shia Mayer, who had moved to Toms River a few months earlier, looked out his window to see one of his neighbors plowing out several houses on the block. When he reached his driveway, Mr. Mayer thanked the volunteer plower saying that his goodwill was especially appreciated in light of the fact that his daughter, who was staying at their home, was expecting a child imminently.

BDE: Reb Mordechai Engel z”l.

Updated: from Matzav It is with great sadness that we report the passing of Reb Mordechai Engel z”l. He was 59 years old. Reb Mordechai battled medical challenges for many years. He resided with his sister’s family in Lakewood, NJ.
Reb Mordechai was an insightful person, who often had enlightening observations that he would share with others. Despite suffering many yissurim, Reb Mordechai was a true maamin and was oveid Hashem b’ahavah.

He passed away under tragic circumstances in Lakewood, NJ, today.

The levayah will be held tonight, at 8:30 p.m., at the Congregation Sons of Israel Memorial Chapel on East 7th Street in Lakewood, NJ.

Corresponding with APP after hateful editorial

Its only a few weeks after a hateful APP editorial about Lakewood's orthodox community, no apology has been given, ok, no one is expecting that to happen. However after a few belated letters to the editors by members of the community no action was taken. The committee continues to post public notices in the paper and now askanim a Vaad member, correspond like nothing happened. In reporting about the proposed pilot program for mandated busing to private schools, the app reports "the bills have the backing of  Rabbi Moshe Zev Weisberg, the leader of the Igud Hamosdos, the council of Orthodox Jewish private school leaders. "We  strongly support it. It is a win for students and their parents who will be less subject to mid-year busing disruptions and crises. It is a win for non-public schools who will have a dedicated clearinghouse for efficient and responsive management of their own student busing needs.

This morning during davening a fellow came around collecting holding a Tomchei Tzedaka Ishur. A quick glance at him said he was not the regular Meshulach from Eretz Yisrael. He was a clean shaven guy looked American and than I saw his name and address. He lives right here in Lakewood regular guy has a job married with kids but cant make ends meet. He is now going around in shuls by himself collecting for pesach and other expenses. A friend of mine approached him and offered to help him with local chesed and tzedaka organizations. He was either too embarrassed or not well connected and he fell through the cracks.

Dont lure away my cleaning help

Its erev Pesach and you planned to change over tomorrow night, you scheduled your cleaning lady to come, she doesn't show up. She never missed a day and didn't call in sick. You find out another desperate yiddeneh offered her more money to come clean by her. This is not hypothetical but its actually happening again. People are paying close to $17 an hour for cleaning help taking away cleaning help from the people who have them on a steady basis. Poskim debate the issue if its Assur al pi halacha. However think of the tzaar caused on someone else who is left with no cleaning help forced to work twice as hard, is that the feeling you want going into the Pesach seder?

The signs are back up (read HERE) after the township inspection department took down signs from a local pesach car cleaning business run by yeshiva bochurim over bein hazmanim. With the help of a committee member the issue has been resolved and the signs are back up again at chometz free car cleaning

Toms River to spend $10 million to stop development from Lakewood

APP reports Toms River township introduced a bill to buy  more than 50 acres off Route 9 near the Lakewood border  for $10.3 million to protect it from potential development. The 56 acres of land  is are located in Toms River's northern section, off Route 9, between Riverwood Drive and Cox Cro Road. It is in the area where council members recently voted to ban real estate soliciting for five years after residents complained that aggressive real estate solicitors were ruining their quality of life.

Appeals court hears Amit Borenstein Jail death arguments

APP reports The Amit Borenstein case has returned before a federal judge, attorneys say the legal errors were made during the trial  "The 2010 death of Amit Bornstein in Monmouth County Jail returned before federal judges last week as attorneys made oral arguments in the ongoing appeal of his family's wrongful death lawsuit. Three judges for the U.S. Third Circuit Court of Appeals in Philadelphia heard the case Thursday.
A federal jury in March 2015 determined corrections officers at Monmouth County Jail did not violate Bornstein's civil rights when they scuffled with him twice before he died in custody in 2010. Bornstein's father initially sued both Monmouth County as well as Correct Care Solutions, LLC, the vendor that provides medical care at the jail, alleging civil rights violations and negligence."

Toms River honors man who rescued jewish baby in fatal crash

VIN Lakewood, NJ - Just one month after the horrific death of an Orthodox Jewish mother from Toms River in a collision, a local man was honored for rescuing her infant daughter from the mangled wreck.
As previously reported on VIN News, Leah Eisdorfer of Toms River was driving on New Hampshire Avenue on March 9th when her vehicle inexplicably crossed the yellow line and plunged down an embankment, killing the 28 year old instantly.

Pesach pricewars

Competition is a good thing. Pesach food shopping is in full swing and the price wars have begun. The Lakewood supermarkets and grocery stores are advertising sales and specials on many products. Stores also are selling cheaper by the case at discounted prices. Options of ordering in bulk through the likes of Moadim L'simcha or local shuls also help ease the financial burden. Special Pesach circulars were sent out with many sale items for yom tov shopping. The addition of new supermarkets in Lakewood at least for now has brought down food prices and forced other stores to be competitive. Eventually prices will go up but for now food shopping has become somewhat affordable.

Moadim L'simcha pickup today, weather to clear up

The Pesach Moadim Lesimcha pick up will take place today April 12 starting at 5 pm until 9 pm. The distribution will take place at the stadium parking lot corner of Cedarbridge and New Hampshire avenues. The forecast calls for the rain to clear out at 3 pm.

The Civil Illiberties Union Targets a Yeshiva

New Jersey’s college grants set off church-state alarms—and years of litigation.
Rabbi Aharon Kotler arrived in the U.S. on April 10, 1941, having escaped Lithuania as the Nazis approached. Even as the Holocaust proceeded to destroy Jewish life in Europe, Rabbi Kotler declared that he would rebuild it in America.
He convinced 13 students to join him in Lakewood, N.J., where in 1943 he founded Beth Medrash Govoha. Today, BMG enrolls more than 6,800. Another mark of its success is that the school now has become caught up in a lawsuit brought by the American Civil Liberties Union.

Township removes signs from Pesach car cleaning buisness

The Lakewood inspection Dept removed advertising signs from one of the many chometz car cleaning services run by yeshiva bochurim during Bein hazmanim. The signs for Chometz free car cleaning, were not placed on a street corner, or stand alone signs but actually attached to trailers that are placed in different strategic locations around town. The reason given for the removal was, the signs are too big. Mind you, these signs are actually on a truck like a banner, its no different had it been painted on the truck like an ad that all companies do. The recent ordinance passed to restrict the size of advertising signs, did not specify truck mounted banners.

A bit to early to celebrate

Last year it wasn't until 2 weeks before chanukah more than 3 months into the school year that all girls were placed in high school. What followed was outrage (The speech) and awareness hoping to bring an end to it. So it came at no surprise that askanim or roshei mosdos put out Press release in local news sites congratulating themselves for sending acceptance letters for all girls who applied for the coming year. In addition 2 new high schools will be open. Sadly, there still are girls that have not received answers and of those who did some of them belong in those schools like a square peg in a round hole. The real celebration is when all girls actualy will be in school on day 1. For now it looks positive but we might have jumped the gun. Article on Matzav  about Kiddush hashem in Lakewood.

Those who have been following the tremendous growth of the Lakewood community are aware of how difficult the school acceptance process is, Particularly for girls’ high schools, where there is not enough space. Additionally, 8th grade girls not receiving a letter of acceptance at the same time as their classmates can be particularly challenging for them and their families. Unfortunately, in past years this process has dragged on for months.

Baruch Hashem, this year, for the first time in many years, each and every high school applicant received an acceptance at the same time.

NJ Bill to Increase Security At Private Schools Passes Assembly Vote

Hamodia A bill that would significantly increase security funding for non-public schools unanimously passed the New Jersey state assembly on Thursday. If implemented, it will raise the amounts allotted to schools from $25 to $144 per student. The vote was hailed by advocates of the Jewish community. Rabbi Avi Schnall, Director of Agudath Israel’s New Jersey division, said that funds awarded over the past year have been used by many mosdos to install security cameras and reinforce windows and doors, but that this increase would allow many larger institutions to hire full-time security guards.

Hire local

The Lakewood township committee should do more to hire local residents. With so many qualified workers looking for jobs, its only fair the township look in its own back yard. Same for the various township boards why are non Lakewood residents sitting on some of these boards representing the local population? There are many kollel wives looking for secretarial work why is the township not reaching out to hire them? Govt jobs have great benefits why dont we see the township advertise in the jobs section of the  local weeklies? It should do more to make government employment jobs available to the community.

Attempt to secure additional funds for the district

Hamodia  A school budget has been proposed for the coming year that slashes teaching jobs and afterschool programs as well as totally eliminating courtesy busing. The austere plan is a part of an attempt by state monitors to restore the district to solvency and dig out of its $12 million deficit.

“There really isn’t any other option, if we can’t get additional funding,” said board member Isaac Zlatkin, who explained that the board is obligated to present a balanced budget to the state. “The monitor [a reference to Michael Azzara, who heads the state’s team] has said that there is no mismanagement in the district and is very upset about the situation. The state tells him to go fix things and then they turn their back on him.”

Did they discuss Courtesy busing?

Private event honoring elected officials and representatives of state Govt sponsored by a local org. Vaad says to vote again and again for these candidates, did they help deal with courtesy busing or the state monitor? Why do some yechidim claim to represent the interests of the tzibbur at large. The taxpayers who actually vote dont see any representation or advocacy regarding the real issues that affect us.

Another response to APP

Letter to App by Vaad member
The March 30 Asbury Park Press editorial “A.G. must take close look at Lakewood” regarding Lakewood’s Orthodox community reeks of stereotyping and hate-baiting. It rides the current wave of nasty anti-Orthodox sentiment promoting further divisiveness and hostility. Regrettably, it is far below the journalistic standards expected of the Press.

Who could contemplate that in 2016 America an entire community of 50,000-plus souls would be typecast in a bigoted and Jew-phobic manner reminiscent of the Germany of the 1930s?

Filling up the L

The Lakewood shuttle launched a  new route to accomodate kiryas Belz in Harmony park. Askanim and officials gathered for a photo op at the ceremonial first run yesterday at 11:30 am. There are other areas in Lakewood that could use the bus service such as seniors and other long established developments. However, to increase ridership, it would make sense to choose Harmony park were the women dont all drive.
